Default ? re sign at the Corvette plant

Great pics - thanks for posting!

I do have a question re the "billboard" sign at the factory which shows up in several pictures circa 1986/87 with the C4s.

The sign reads:

Chevrolet - Pontiac
Canada Group

Corvette Plant

I'm not sure I understand that designation, but what the heck was the Canada Group?

I've been to the factory 3 times over the past 20 years or so and don't recall ever seeing a reference to the "Canada Group" during those visits.

Was that just a temporary GM internal organizational designation?

Thanks!

Excellent question and here is the answer. >>>GM in their infinite wisdom had the idea of combining Buick Olds and Cadillac and then combining Chevrolet, Pontiac and GM of Canada. Their thought process was for design validation at the Plants and operate as one big car group split in two. Sort of a re branding. It was that kind of OLD GM strategy that really hurt GM and was a big waste of money. Hence the sign outside of the Corvette plant!

Mike,

At one point in the 1990's, I had read that a group within GM wanted to take Corvette away from Chevrolet. Don't remember if they were going to make it a separate vehicle line or marry it within Cadillac. You might remember that better than I.

If I tried to keep track of all the rumors over the years...ugh...not fun. Some really stupid stuff over the years. I’m so glad we didn’t have the internet back when I started!

Great pics Mike....EXCEPT the noticeable (to me) exclusion of the generation 61-2 versions of the C1.

Thanks a lot for posting, very informative pics. Wow, there sure were a lot of red C2s even before "resale red" came along!

I wondered why they were all missing the gas caps. Didn't catch in the 2nd photo they were missing the wheels and were on pallets. Guess I should have put my readers on.
