How is the lighter supposed to function? Do you push it in, it stays pushed in, then pops back when its hot? I can push mine in, but when I let go, it pops right back. If I do hold it in, it will heat up. It also seems to be a little loose and have a little play in it. I won't ever use it, but I would like it to function properly, ha.

I got a repro of just the **** and element, but it still does the same thing. Makes me think it’s an issue with the surrounding piece that is attached to the dash.

Yes the barrel. There are little prongs that clip the lighter element and when hot they release. You can very carefully with no power to the lighter try and adjust them

Just make sure that you have the power OFF when you bend those little tangs inside the lighter.
The problem is not usually the part that pops out... the problem is the female receptacle with sometimes two... sometimes three "fingers" at the base.
Those little fingers grasp the male element. When it heats to XX temperature... it releases and the element pops out of the receptacle, NOT out onto the floor of the car.
There is an art to setting up an original lighter.

65 Lighter
Remember that the 65 lighter circuit is not fuse protected. And the newer repro sockets have a feature whereby if the lighter stays in and overheats it will purposely short out to blow the fuse. If you don't have a fused lighter circuit (66 and earlier do not) then you are in deep trouble.Don't take my word. Research it.Better to add a fuse or disconnect. A bad element can short out.

I just bought a new inner barrel but have no intention of using the heating element, I just want it to charge my cell phone, but I think I’ll remove the bi-metallic part anyway.

C4 are fused. Look in your interior fuse block and make sure it’s good. If you have any more problems with your C4 please post it in the C4 section. This section is for 1953-1967 only. Good luck
