Default how to value basket case '65?

All,

My late-uncle has had his '65 convertible sb/4sp since probably the 70s. To be honest, it's a basket case. It has frame issues in the typical C2 location, the interior needs completely redone, engine would certainly need rebuilt. It hasn't run in 20+ years. It's just a mess. However, it's likely a numbers matching car, for whatever that would be worth on a car in poor condition.

How do people establish a value for something like this? I'll post some pics if it would help.

Thanks,

-Dave

You could post it on eBay with lots of pictures and a good description. Set the reserve at a level you are comfortable selling it for and let the market set the sell price .

Be careful about the "likely numbers matching" statement. Make sure it is and the rest of the drive train is original. If it's not the orig engine, that's a big $$ hit. As someone else said, we need pictures. Dennis

Too many variables.

For example:

What drivetrain? A 250hp with 3-speed, even numbers matching is not a high value combo. On the other hand, a fuelie (only 771 made, IIRC) or a 396 big block is desirable.

A tired interior requiring complete replacement of soft parts costs the same whether it is just tired or totally trashed.

A no-hit, non-modified body is far more desirable.

Frame condition and birdcage condition are key facets in deterring value.

If you posted a few pictures, your estimates here would focus up.

A real basket case is a money pit and not worth restoring in general.

A so called "barn find" that is tired but complete could be worth as little as 10K or as much as $30K for a desirable car.

Drivetrain is 327/300hp w/ close-ratio trans. I only said 'likely' matching numbers just knowing nothing has been swapped out since I was a kid in the 70s. What happened prior to that, I dont know. But I agree it needs to be confirmed.

Birdcage may have issues, I seem to remember my uncle being concerned about that. It also has the removable hard top and a '67 stinger hood, and sidepipes.

Thanks for the responses, I'll try to get some pictures posted in the next couple days.

The market will determine what it's worth, when you get pictures posted and get it on ebay. From my experience, you can get probably twice the money for it if you can assemble it enough so that it LOOKS like a Corvette and not a bunch of parts. Even if it's just a roller, having an engine in place and the car bolted together, no matter how rough, will make it a MUCH easier sale. Basket cases sold in boxes bring absolute bottom dollar.

Dave;

Are you needing to value it for settling the estate, i.e., wanting to sell it to the open market, or to buy it from the estate (you seem as if you may be a car guy).

If you post it here with pics the guys on the forum can give you a pretty good idea what it's worth.

Basket cases are bringing stupid big dollars lately....ebay, and bank it!.....or use the $$$ to buy a well sorted one for not much more money. Life's too short to be upside down in a car after investing a couple of years of your life.

Kind of -- my cousin is never going to do anything with the car. If, as someone else said, basket cases are bringing stupid money on ebay, maybe that will be the route to go.

But, I am a car guy too. I'm not sure I'm interested in a project as big as this one. I could probably get the car for a real nice price on the premise that I was going to get it back on the road (ie-- not flip it). However, I already have my dad's '63 convertible, which is a restored driver.

I will be stopping at my cousin's house this weekend to get the pics.

ah, the strings of "if you build it". If its that far gone, dont especially if the birdcage and frame have issues its not worth it. You wouldnt believe what it costs to put one together even used parts.(why I sold the vette and finished the a body) lol.
Maybe offer to sell it for him if he wil kick down a few $
Cheap vettes are the most expensive ones out there.

Running, driving used 65 small block convertible in average condition. $50,000, maybe.

Basket case 65 convertible needing frame and birdcage repair and not knowing what is actually usable or missing. Minus $30,000 on a good day if you can find someone willing to take it on. Will cost $40,000 plus to get it up to snuff and pretty.

Don’t kid yourself. It isn’t an easy project.

At some point even for free would be too much if the frame and birdcage are rotted out.

There are cars, and there are parts cars. The hard part is knowing the dividing line.

Location would help. I'm sure someone can look it over for you and give you a better idea. i bought a "in boxes" basket case in 86 for 2500 and its taken me 25+ years to piece it back together. good luck
