car show idea???
Any of you have some car show ideas (activities, judging and contests)?
I checked with a local mobile dyno (@thunderhill)...
I thought maybe a drive in theater.

Trying to make it fun than just having a car show. I know... Silent auction and raffle but been done to death.

We used to have a spark plug install contest on one head sitting on picnic table.

Pin the tail on the donkey, or clothespin toss into milk bottles?

Couple cool things I've seen:
*Grocery guess. 3 or 4 bags of groceries, come the closest to what they all cost and you get them.
*Another one for the gals attending (they like to have something to do too)--kitchen utensil guess. They had a curtain booth set up, inside was a board with maybe 20 numbered utensils on it----some pretty bizarre. Had to write down what you thought they were.
*Every year the Muddy River Run in Ft Wayne had a crushed car cube brought in. Had to guess the make and year. Got real competitive. Was a lot of fun.
*Muffler rap contest---not my thing but is a crowd pleaser.
*Wrong way go cart. Go cart with no motor. You'd drive and your partner would push. Have to go around some cones and come back. OK, now the fun part-----the go cart was rigged so the steering was backwards------right was left and left was right. Harder than you think!
*Auto Trivia. Throughout the day ask some auto trivia questions. Door prize. Lot of people send their kids with the answer.
*Cruise. Saturday evening 4:00. Probably about a 10 mile cruise through downtown/residential. A LOT of coordination with the local police to shut down some streets and wave you through red lights. But it is a heck of a highlight for many participants
*Even if it's small a swap meet is a winner at a car show.

Hey now! Trying to get something that kids can do. Or something more than a stupid judging contest and sitting around. Thats the problem with a car show.
I thought about getting a mobile dyno. That would be cool.

I agree with the stupid judging contest and sitting around which are high on my list of why I don't like to do car shows.
Beer and food go a long ways to keeping people busy. Hood hand waxing contest with a cooked paint hood out of a junk yard??? Mark it off in sections and let people show what talent they have for restoring paint.

Be careful with the Dyno idea we had that at our show and one of the cars on the Dyno the engine exploded and the connecting rod flow about 400 feet from the car thank God no one got hit in the head the risk is too high. There is nothing worse than a participation award at a show. What are we three years old? I know it’s very hard to get qualified judges I was a judging chairman for 18 years with the biggest corvette shows on the North East Coast. The all day car shows are becoming a thing of the past you may do one maybe two a year. Everyone loves the cruise nights where you just Pull in hang out and go home. We still do our show as a fundraiser but we raise more money by raffling off a car then we do a show. And the show is only a one day affair instead of three.

Drifting
Many years ago I came up with a game called Go & Whoa. Draw a start and finish line about 30ft apart and mark them with cones. A car pulls up to the first line with the wheels pointed straight, takes a look at the finish line, then puts a paper bag over their head and drives forward trying to stop on the finish line. Measure the distance and record it. Closest one wins. You can have a 1st, 2nd & 3rd. Only the person running the game can say "stop", otherwise the driver is disqualified. Lots of fun and very safe.

I salute you for trying to shake up a pretty stagnant tradition...
We had an event at a drive-inn 2-3 years ago. It was pretty cool, but only 5 of us showed up. I hadn't been to a drive-in for 35 years.. my son had never been to one.
To me, the destination for a good show has to be interesting.. Something to walk to... something to see.. taste.. shop... etc.. Winery's and breweries make good destinations.. Especially ones with car collections!

Normally I am in and out of a car show in 30 minutes or less. Less if do-wop music is blasting. I have only entered my Corvette in one show; the annual Father's Day Show at Stan Hywet Hall in Akron. It is the only one that keeps my interest for a few hours. Why? It is held at an old estate with plenty of tree shade. The cars are shown on the lawn and are from every era and type. There is plenty of craft beer and good food. I am just not into hot asphalt parking lots with lousy food and crappy music.
