My reading of the NCRS spec guide is that only 1956 through 1967 had the option of taking the aux hardtop in place of the softtop, ie, convertible was priced the same whether you took the softtop only or the aux hardtop in place of the softtop; it cost extra (the price of the hardtop) to have both. No hardtop available in 1953 to 1955 Corvettes, and a hardtop was only sold in addition to the base price of a convertible (which included the softtop) on C3's.
