Default shock mount repro metal is garbage

The front shock mount has so many cracks. I have had to weld it three times now. The darn thing keeps cracking at the bolt where it connects to the lower a arm and the bowl. Its installed right just the metal is cracking.

frustrating!

If you're talking about those lower C1 front shock mounting components, the originals didn't hold up either. I replaced 'em a couple of times myself.

i assume you're mounting them correctly; positioning the tabs as they should be ?!

YEP, but I HOPE you are aware they are EXACTLY the same part on 49-54 pass cars-------------------AND WILL BE A HECK OF A LOT CHEAPER FROM AN EARLY CHEVY SOURCE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go over to Chevy Talk forum and ask if anyone has some good ones!
Of all the frontend parts that I have, I do not think I have any spare shock mounts-----------------but if I do have any, you can HAVE ONE.

if you're desperate, weld the crack(s) up and then weld a thick washer on top as a reinforcement

I picked up an OEM one for 10.00 plus shipping. I am hoping this one will do the trick.

Thanks for the offer!

Yes, it was installed correctly.

I did not take a picture of the broken part. I can tell its a flaw with the metal. Its very brittle.

Its a poor design, along with the C1 'single shear' clutch linkage setup.
But some think GM engineers could do no wrong; not true...

Now, I have worked on the same shock mount 4 times. Its frustrating! This weekend, I need to drive the corvette. I ordered another one just waiting for the part to arrive.

did you reinforce it with a HEAVY washer welded/brazed to it after the crack(s) repaired?

Yes, this time it bent downwards... I think the metal is just so soft. I mig welded it with my miller multimatic 215.

Yeah, it just has to last through this weekend.

Cheap metal and bad design on GMs part. Who needs shocks anyways...

Good Morning,

I found this one, hit it with the blaster quickly, and it doesn’t look bad other than what appears to be a grinder hit. You are welcome to it. PM your address and I’ll get it headed your way.

Just curious how you found it? What was your car doing as to notice it?

Lol. I am replacing my frame and bought an extra front crossmember, so this was an extra. I’ve got my 2 painted, so I figured it’s better to be used than lost in my garage.

I am wondering if the shocks were bottoming out (and bending the shock mount) when you had the other (lower?) springs in there.

I still have the originals, with stiffer shocks, and have not had any issues.
