Default 61' fuelie air filter box

I have an internet friend in Australia who has a ’61 fuelie. The car needs an air filter box but, with shipping, the cost would be over $1000. He does not need an NCRS correct part, so he had the bright idea of using a 3D printer to make the air box. Only problem is we need the dimensions of an original part in order to design the 3D model. Does anyone have any dimensioned drawings or does anyone have an original box from which they could take some measurements?
Thanks,
Charles

Charles,

Years ago there were fiberglass reproductions of these housings. They show up from time to time and are significantly less expensive than steel repops or originals. It might be easier to acquire one of these than to develop a 3D model.

I have the fiberglass one from way-back-when... and it is serviceable, but nowhere near as good as a metal one... and, as you say, the metal repro ones are $$$.

it is amazing what can be 3D printed now, even out of metal... but it's going to take a large printer just because of the physical size of the assembly.

I am on the Solstice forum and there are a couple of guys who are 3D printing things that are made of 'unobtanium' now for Sky's and Solstices. it is fascinating what they have done and what they think they can do in the future.

bear in mind, there are 2 versions; the big X and the smaller X and the internals are slightly different because of what is used for the filter elements.

I will be interested to see how this goes...

Bill:
I was not aware that there were two different sizes. Was the size changed at a certain time period or some other reason?

I have the basic shape designed, just need some exact dimensions.

not 2 different sizes, 2 different types. physically the outside dimensions are the same, it's the interiors that are different. the large X lid signifies the earlier models and uses a paper air filter, the small X lid (I think 62 only) uses a foam filter element and requires slightly different internals.

but either version can be used on any 58-62 FI C1

Bill

1st 2pix is 58-62early, 2nd 2pix is 62 only

Bill:
Thanks for the clarification. Are the filters interchangeable?

kinda sorta, I think with the paper filter there is a metal plate that goes on top of it to force the air to flow through the filter rather than bypass it.

with the foam filter the filter hugs the top sides and lid of the assembly and seals against the lid.

I am using a 'washable' fabric filter (like a K&N but not a K&N) that seals against the lid

OK, lets approach this from the inside. The picture below that I lifted off the internet is supposedly an original AC77C filter. Can someone give the the dimensions (A, B, and C) of this filter (or a K&N or other replacement). I would also like to have the overall height of this filter.
Thanks,
Charles

OK. I have a parametric design of the air box in CAD. Just need a few basic measurements from the drawings below - L1, L2, DIA, ANG, H1, and H2. Anyone????

DIA is 4.75", an odd duck size.

without having the 'box' off the car it is going to be difficult to get some of the info you need, especially the angle

True. Just hoping someone may have one off the car.

Based on some measurements I found for the K&N replacement filter, I created a 3D model of the air box. Here is a link if you are interested:

This is an animated GIF file so give it time to play.

conceptually, I think you've got it; but you still need to get 'real' dimensions

H1 = 1 15/16"
H2 = 5 3/4"
H1 + H2 pushed together 7 1/4" (meaning the lip on the top pushes down 7/16")

L1 = 11 5/8"

L2 is where it gets tricky, because one end is wider that the other. L2 on the lid is 7" at its widest point, and 6" and down at the other end.

Diameter at where each air hose connects is 4 5/8".

Angle is roughly 10 degrees but is difficult to measure, especially since the L2 of the filter box has angled to its widest point (6 1/2" without the lid on) where the air hose mounting surface starts.

These measurements are off an original a/c I bought from Jerry Bramlett, not a fiberglass repro.
