Fuel won't flow up hill over the top of the tank without a vacuum to get it started.

Sorry. Don’t know what the heck I was thinking. AZDoug is right, you need to get a hose lower than the tank and get siphon on it.

It's a C1 - the sending unit is in the TOP half of the tank, not in the bottom like a midyear.

Shouldn't it be gravity fed? I've changed lines and the sending unit before on this car more than once, and I did as I usually do, which is fill the carb's bowl, let the engine run and it has always primed itself. And the hose I disconnected was below the tank kevel. I will try a mityvac on it when I recover (have health issues) a bit and will let you know. Thanks.

The "self priming" as you call it is vacuum created by the fuel pump.
No its not gravity fed, the outlet comes out the top of the tank, and drops down the side.

To get fuel to flow, you either need to pressurize the tank, or create vacuum on the outlet.
Once the fuel is flowing, it will siphon it self out

Default Aargh!

This morning had the car running. Let it run for a while. Shut it off for five minutes and started it again. Left it for several hours. Started it and it ran for a little while (probably what was left in the carb) and quit. No more fuel coming out.
It has got to be an intermittent fuel pump. No local stores have a pump that will match up to the lines in stock. Going to order a new one online & hopefully will have Tuesday. Already took the old one off.

Do a search for 409/409 and you'll see I had the same exact problem wit my 1961 Cadillac convertible.
