Default What is this line for?

I've seen this line in more that a few photos of 1962 corvette engine bays, but I don't have this on mind. I have the metal tube for the choke, I have the vacuum line going to the distributor, but I don't have the rubber looking hose/line that goes down just inside of the exhaust manifold.

What is this for?

Sorry, the photo won't attach inline.

Well, it was a .pdf so I took a picture of it to make it a .jpg, so it would upload inline. The choke tube is present, but it's the hard line in the photo. This looks like a rubber line that goes up to the carburetor and maybe pushes over a metal nipple on the exhaust manifold. I made it more confusing by making out some writing on the exhaust manifold since it's not my picture.

It’s the fresh air hose for the carburetor and belongs there.

So, if I don't have one, I need to add it. I pulled up a drawing online and it looks like it goes to the exhaust manifold down low and the plugs into the carburetor. I have a replacement AFB 3721/AB instead of the original 3269S carburetor, so does this make a difference.

What effect will this have on the carburetor? Not perform as well? Not do ?????

I'm blown away its missing.

You should add it -- the hose costs next to nothing and the metal piece for the manifold that holds the hose is one bolt to install..... The fresh air hose helps keep the choke area clean including its internal piston - if that gets grungy then you are going to have problems.

The 3721S is a service replacement carb and configured the same...

Okay, got it. Thank you. I didn't think I had the proper air horn tube, but I do. This was before having the carb OH'd a month ago.

It does go there but I have seen Soooo many AFBs with the hose bib plugged as yours is....not correct and many get away with it......until they don't.

BTW - your carb has the hot idle compensator....I don't see that many still installed...

To wit, if your curb idle 'hunts' a bit on a hot day....increasing 75RPM or so then settling back down; its entirely normal...

Interesting! So the WCFB does not have anything like this?

If you're talking about the fresh air choke system; the early carbs (e.g. dual quad) did not and carbs with the brass vent tubes straddling the carb's bores did not....the later carbs did...mine does on the '63...

Soooo, should it be removed? Where is it on the carb? I don't know sh*t about this stuff, but I'm soaking up information from this forum like a sponge and loving it. Learning about what you own is almost as much fun as owning it. I haven't been this engaged on any hobby in decades.

That would be the little 'fliz' in the red rectangle....shown in the pic. Its sort of a Rube Goldberg deal and is also in some Quadrajets, etc.. To wit, when the car gets to a certain temperature - this bi-metallic 'compensator' opens a controlled vacuum leak in the carb; resulting in a stepped up idle. Presumably the faster idle cools things down enough that the device closes off the vacuum leak and the idle backs down. Cycle repeats as necessary.

They were deemed largely useless at one point and eliminated from many (most?) designs...
I would just leave it alone and only mentioned because some novices tuning a car will try to 'chase' a proper curb idle while this thing is operating and screwing them up. You can push it closed with a fingertip when adjusting the idle...

Thanks Frankie! I understand now. BTW, what carb are you running? Way different than my AFB.

My split window came with an AFB riding on an aftermarket manifold - not correct for a 63 250hp car. Before I had the car judged I swapped on the correct WCFB and intake manifold.

The WCFB (Will Carter Four Barrel) is the predecessor to your AFB and I've had many dual quad versions of them...they are venerable old beasts and once dialed in perform excellently...

I just today finished creating another, spare 'numbers correct' WCFB as a backup by gutting three other carbs to make one with all the right parts and numbers...

Great drawing Skeew. A picture truly is worth a thousand words. I had no idea a tube passed through the exhaust manifold, I'll have to take a look when I get the car back next week. All I can say is "wow', so much I didn't know.

The things you learn here. My wife's '68 Cougar, 302 2v, has the same set up. Now I know why. Thanks

Joe
