What Muncie Do I Have?
Got the motor and trans out and will post that later. Here are the numbers on my trans. There is an RI engraved that I have no idea what it is. I'm assuming something to do with rebuilding maybe? Is this an M20?

Transmission is from a 1967 model year Corvette. The two rings on the input shaft indicate M20 wide ratio.

E11 is May 11, 1967 day trans was assembled. RI is 'non-factory" .

Thanks guys. I just now need to read up on what the difference is between wide and close. The next time you hear me say "I wonder what it looks like in there?", stop me. I decided to see what the gears looked like so I popped the cover off and now I can't get those forks to go back on with the cover. Not sure what the trick is and of course I open the one thing my wife can't stand in the garage. The smell of gear oil. Anyway, how do you think these gears look?

For what can be seen they don't look too bad to me. But you would need to break it completely down to check the sliders, play with the syncro blocker rings to verify the cones are excessively worn, etc. Was it mis-behaving any before you removed it? Kicking out of gear? Grinding on an upshift?

To get the cover back on you need to put the 3rd-4th slider in neutral and the 1st-2nd slider in 2nd.
Joe
First put the forks back into the cover:
The next two pictures are from a T-10 but the procedure is the same. Move the 1-2 slide forward onto the second gear:
Now move the 1-2 fork toward the center of the cover into 2nd. This will allow the fork to clear the trans case. Now tilting the cover downward and the forks upward align the forks with the bottom of the two slides and move it into the case.

Plaidside has it right.....best to remove that cover with the tranny in second gear then replacing it is easy....
The 'guts' look about like my early Muncie when I was in it a while back -- and it shifts and operates just fine...

Dan, I don’t remember it kicking out of gear but is hasn’t ran since 1986.
Thanks Plaidside. I couldn’t figure what the right combination was and there appears to be a lot of choices.
