OT My '69 Schwinn Varsity back in use.
Now that I am retired, I took down my bike hanging on hooks in the garage to a bike shop to get her back on the road. Some new tires and wires with adjustments and my *** is back on the road. A great find in my own garage! Bought her in '69 as a sophomore in college and she was my main means of transportation until mid law school. No muscle cars for me, my first car was a VW. Totally original, numbers matching with original paint although the motor maybe a little worn out.

Picked up a green girl's Varsity of the same vintage at a thrift store 20 years ago for the girlfriend for $20. She rode it until two years ago, when it got stolen. Super solid, albeit a bit heavy, and comfortable ride. Still have my dad's 1971 Nishiki Olympiad, which I ride every now and then. Neat stuff, thanks for sharing!

My son who is a triathlete wanted a real bike to compete with.....I got him this and the next year got him electric shifters (really makes a difference, no more hunting for gear engagement, bam it’s there now). It weighs next to nothing with an all carbon fiber frame.....the white bike in front he just bought to take to Australia in September for the World Championships for Sprint and Olympic Triathlon age groups. He has a sponsor in Irwin Wheels......that rear wheel alone is about $2500!
And I thought Corvettes were a sickness!

I should that the bikes have all kinds of instrumentation on them to determine power output, combined with his GPS watch he knows where on the course at any second what kind of power he is putting out. An easy bike ride for him is 50 miles, typical is 75-100 in Boulder, Colorado, so he has altitude and hills to contend with!

Ok, here's my Fuji Ace. I hadn't ridden a bike since I was about 15. A few years ago, a girl down the street gave me this one as she was moving back to France. New tires and a little cleaning and I was back on two wheels. I think it's a 1998 or 99?
And this is HER Schwinn.

Very cool that you still have yours. Wish I still had mine. Loved that bike.
Ride it with pride!

Paper route earnings! I can't think of anything that equals that positive experience for the youth of today. Getting out of bed before sunrise. Going outside in every type of weather condition so that you can sit on a curb in the darkness and fold newspapers, then slide a rubber band over each and and neatly fill 1 to 3 bike baskets full.
After you triple the weight of the bike, you jump on and ride up and down the neighborhood streets in the dark, carefully pitching each day's news into that spot that suits your customer. And if you've done everything right, your customers will answer the door at week's end to pay you for that newspaper. Hopefully you got a small tip for the extra efforts. And even if you didn't get that extra quarter, you repeated the same process the next morning with the same dedication.
Damn, look at us now.

In the spirit of this topic I also want to show what type of bike I have. It's like the bike seen in my picture above. I keep it in my office for those early morning cruises on the weekends.

One assumes that this is going toward self-pedaling autonomous electric bikes.

Varsity’s were cool, but if you had a Schwinn CONTINENTAL you were extra cool! (And had more money). I had neither...
