Default Muncie suggestions

I currently have a Muncie trans for sale in the sale section. I thought it was a '64 with case 3851325, side cover 3831707, tail 3846429 with the speed connection on
the drivers side. A forum member suggested that it is a '65 with an incorrect tail piece. I am not doubting his knowledge by any means, since I am no expert on
Muncie. Since the trans has no vin # would I be better to change the tail to a '65? If so what is the correct one with the speedo on the pass. side for a '65?
Thanks Ric

I would not change it unless I had one unused sitting on the shelf. But, up to 2/65 3846429 and after 3857584 according to Colvin.

They aren't judged; you can get a Top Flight with that transmission in a 64 -- only a "numbers junkie" is gonna lose sleep over it... I wouldn't change a thing...

With a 325 case, that identifies it as a 64-65. The 429 tail housing is a 64-early 65 tail housing (FOR CHEVROLETS!). BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, the 429 tail housing continued to be used on some other GM cars up to about 1970, such as GTOs.
Notice the square boss on the top-center-rear of the main case. That is indicative of a later 65 main case. That boss on earlier 325 cases was round, as seen below on the long Muncie, compared to the square boss next to it.
Thus, I feel your Muncie is a later 65 version.

And I totally, 100% agree. If that Muncie is in good shape, don't fix it if it ain't broke!

That's a well-known error in the Colvin book - ALL '65 Corvette 4-speeds used the 584 extension housing with the passenger side speedo drive.

All the 65's I've owed sure did. They also had the original speedo bullet that didn't have the seal that was added in 66 because of oil migration up the cable to the speedo head.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, without a VIN on the case, that Muncie could have come from any GM car that was available with a 4sp option.
As far as I know, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 4spds in 65 GM cars were Muncies. The Saginaw 4sp was not introduced until the 66 models and the T-10 was gone by mid 63.
And the FULL SIZE Olds-Pont got the long Muncie as in my picture above.

Thank you for your responses everyone.. so as I understand this tranny with a 584 extension would be correct for a '65 Corvette.
Since there is no vin associated with this main case it could be made to appear to be a Corvette tranny. The configuration as it
is now would have been used in a '65 GM product that required the speedo to connect on the drivers side. Anyone need such a set up?

Buick A-body's used early T-10's thru the 1966 model year...

In the 1965 model year, the top mounting boss on the main case was rounded like a 1964 model year until early Dec.,
by mid Dec. the mounting boss changed to squared version...

I checked a lot of 325 cases and the latest rounded 325 case I could find was P1203,
the earliest squared 325 case I could find was P1214...

Hope this helps... Eric

Thanks John. That’s why I referenced Colvin. My 65, #583 w/ original VIN transmission is right side. Suspected the error but had never been forewarned!
