Default LS swapping my 64 coupe

I am new to the forum but have come here many times over the past few months gathering info for my 64 corvette. I work for my family owned Chevrolet dealership and we traded for this 1964 corvette coupe and from day one i have been wanting to LS3 the thing because it wasn't original when i got it. I have ordered a performance crate engine and silversport transmission as well as all the LS kits parts that Muscle rods has to offer. Im hoping that our service shop can handle the job but i know that we will run into some issues here and there, thats why i joined the forum for pointers and help from corvette enthusiast. We start pulling the motor monday and i plan on keeping this thread up to date so the process can be documented.

Better plan on new brakes while you're at it. Also interested to see how you handle the gauges.

Default Rear end

I plan on using this car as a Sunday driver and not really doing any hard driving. Do you think the original rear end can stay in the car or do I need to change it out? Will it handle the extra horsepower?

Is that a Borgeson steering box ? .... I have one of those sitting in its packaging and I am wondering how the clearance to the exhaust manifold is going to go ! It sure looks close, I use the same stock LS3 manifolds too.... so I assume I will have a similar experience.

Yes it's a Borgeson Box. I didn't have any clearance issue with the box.

If you're laying down the jack to put an LS3 in it, the incremental cost in building up the rear end and adding disk brakes all the way around doesn't amount to much. Definitely our disks all the way around, and wait till your rear end grenades eofre you replace it. If you're truly going to just cruise it, it may hang with you. Having disks all the way around are going to be expected by anyone that looks at it.

what brakes are recommended? i have looked at some of the wildwood kits but they are just the front brakes. also i am currently running manual brakes but i can get a conversion to power from ecklers for around 460.00. can i run the wildwood disc in the front and leave the drums in the rear with a tandem master cylinder?

Stock discs are just fine. For power brakes you will have to notch the hood brace or angle the master cylinder. Easiest is disc front/drums rear with dual MC. For discs in rear you must modify swing arms. BTW I have a show quality set of rear swing arms/disc brakes and a set of front spindles/discs. I'll make you a deal you can't refuse. IMHO power is not needed. Pedal pressure with manual brakes is just fine. Here are the parts you need for front/back discs. 64 is a little easier than 63 at you have the later style ebrake cables? Parts came off of a frame I bought one time and later sold.

IMHO $460 is way too much for power. All you need is a $100 booster and an MC. The distribution block is not necessary as all it does is provide for a brake light.

Yes you can, you'll need a proportioning valve. Get one with a 7/8" bore like this. You won't need or want a brake booster with this.
