Plain Costco (Interstate) in my '61.
My experience with designer batteries (Optima) did not go well in my C5. Acid leak onto one of the computers under the battery tray!

GTOGuy reminds me of my father. He bought a K-Mart LIFETIME battery in 1971 for the '61. And they kept replacing it until the 2000's - when they finally told him "sorry, we ended that policy"!
Probably got 7-8 new batteries out of them!

Another Walmart. We travel in the car allot so I try and use parts that are easily attainable if there is a failure. Walmart batteries are good, have a good warranty and they are every-friggin-where!

I bought a Shucks Auto Parts Lifetime battery in 1974 for my 1960. After several free replacements, they told me the same thing.

You have to be brave to recommend Optima here ! I just sold a car I bought 10 years ago with same Optima battery it came to me with. It was a total of 15 years old so now I will never know how long it actually lasts ! Based on that I put a newer yellow top in my 64, its at 3 yrs and doing fine. I figure if it dies young I will stop buying them, but so far so good.

Autozone. It came with the car, which had a charging system problem. I managed to fully discharge that battery about 5-6 times while I chased down the fault. It still works and holds a charge today.

I have wal-mart group 24,one year replacment warranty, cost $48 and change, have several of them since I dumped my optimas, have not had to replace one yet.

I purchased the exact same battery (Delco 24 series) for my '67' also. But the bottom hold down bracket would not work as the battery did not have an extended edge at the bottom for the hold down bracket to catch on. It was a bit to high for the bracket to secure. The old battery did and it was a 24 series. Had to fabricate one. Did yours fit 'ok' /

I use the Red Top Optima. Have one in there now that's three years old.. Also one on the floor that I pulled out after 8 years that sits on a Battery Tender for other uses around the garage, Still good and will run in any car and have used it to bring home a bud with a toasted battery.

IMHO ...Best battery ever made. The one in the Vette now should go 10 more years.

All kidding aside, assuming your tray and wedge haven't been modified, a Group 24 should have fit your car. Probably unlikely, but you might have gotten a miss-labeled battery - there are a number of close group designations, like a 24F, 24H, 24R and 24T.

The Battery Council International (BCI) is a trade association of manufacturers of original-equipment and after-market automobile batteries and other lead-acid batteries. The trade association provides industry standards for testing, Group number dimensions, and sizes of batteries. Other things like cell layouts, hold downs and polarity are specified. So, a Group 24 battery should be the same in regard to dimensions and hold downs regardless of manufacturer. Capacities are not controlled.
