Windshield Rockchip
Well, the inevitable happened, got a huge rockchip in the middle of my 4 year old windshield. I’m sick, not just because it’s a windshield replacement but a replacement on a C1. Everything on and under the dash works like it should, all gauges, radio, clock, orig. wipers, new padded dash, AC blows cold, etc. and I’m worried that whoever I take it to is certainly not going to be as careful and particular as I would be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a task I want to undertake!
Can anyone recommend a good reliable shop in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? Also, how many shop hours do you think it would take?

Wow…..sorry to see that bud.
Not too many individuals currently working in the glass repair shops would have the necessary experience for a quality replacement.
I think I would take it to a reputable Corvette restoration shop. At the very least, I feel they would know how to start the job, as well as finish the job too.
I'll bet even they would figure 6 to 8 hours on it.

That’s what I’m looking for, a good Corvette restoration shop in my area. Anyone know of a reputable one?

Man that's horrible... I just had that happen to me on the work van- saw that baby flying right at me and "pow" into the glass.
Though mine was not as severe they were able to get Safelight out and they were able to fill it with epoxy and the repair is not noticeable... they use a vacuum process to facilitate the repair.
I would see if they can repair it before replacement...
but that my friend is a ugly one.
Sorry that happened to your baby...

I know Hill Country is a ways from you, but Hill Country Corvette is down there in New Braunfels. Dan Martin would do the removal and install as meticulously as you would. He is an NCRS master judge and been restoring vettes for decades. I suggest you call him, tell him Don referred you, and ask what shop he knows of up your way that will take care of your baby. I hate rock cracked windshields. I feel for you. What can you do, if you drive your vettes? Dan will be in Las Vegas next week for the NCRS National, so you may not reach him. I'll mention that I referred you on this when I see him there.

You might want to check with Corvette World in Carrolton on I-35 and talk with their service desk, I have had work done there on my 62 as they both sell and service Vette's. I don't think they would do windshield replacements as they primarily work on mechanical stuff but the service folks know a lot of other specialty places that deal with specific Vette stuff and I'd bet they would be able to point you to a good glass shop that knows the workings of windshield replacement in a C1. Good luck I know it bites when something like this happens.

In 2008 my '61 windshield cost $2,700 to replace by Burke's Corvette in Maitland, FL. Insurance paid the entire bill - there is no deductible as its a safety item. To wit, take the car to the best, most competent shop you can find on these cars and get an estimate for the work (I used ALL new rubber and fasteners) and then decide if you want to do some of it, all of it or farm the whole job out...

Yes, I want new rubber and the post on the drivers side has never been broken, would like to get it altered also. And I’m going to make and furnish a nutplate for the sunvisor center holes. Don’t know how the ends were done as they’re right next to the post, no room for a nutplate. I have yet to call Glassworks though.

Well, guess that answers that question, I’ll have to use a sheet metal screw there but with a firm nutplate at the other end, it might be enough to hold it. Haven’t lost anything by bonding one in.

Needless to say - if you need a dash pad - now is the time !

Give Carr Campbell at Carr's Corvettes and Customs in Plano a call. He does, both, NCRS Top Flight restorations and resto-mods. Excellent work.

Carr told me he uses Deep Ellum Auto Glass when I inquired about removing my windshield.

He’s the one that put in the windshield in 2014, along with new dash pad, painting dash, gauge restoration, etc. Yes, he does good work, but expensive. He gave me a quote on this.

I may go to that place today and see if they’ll do it, I know they don’t like to. Are you kidding, why would Carleen have a windshield laying around? Besides, I don’t think I want to tackle this myself.
