Route 66

Melting Slicks
Done 66 a few times and found it enjoyable, but there aren't many places that really connect the era to our cars, places we can take a holiday pic that could possibly have been taken when the C2 was the current Corvette.
St. Louis being home town (for the car anyway) I did get this pic parked on the steep banks of the Ol' Miss.
Construction of the Gateway arch began February 12, 1963, and was completed on October 28, 1965, so that's pretty darned correct for a road trip in my '65.

I was at the Cadillac Ranch in February and was disappointed by the amount of trash laying around the area. (Empty paint cans, plastic bags, etc). Also, some thought it was okay to paint the fence and gate at the entrance.
A neat place to see on a Rte.66 trip is Meteor Crater, west of Winslow, Az.

Always love to see pictures of the famous Route 66, I traveled part of it in the 60s, and never appreciated till now!

If you don’t do anything else stop and talk to “Crazy Legs” Dean at the Philips 66 in Baxter Springs Kansas. He was the voice of Mater in the first Cars Disney movie and will tell you a bunch of local folklore.
He can also stand facing you with his feet completely backwards - something I don’t need to see twice.

I thought that was Larry the Cable Guy?
Edit - research shows Mater was voiced by Larry the Cable Guy in all 3 Cars movies.
Looks like maybe FtF was bamboozled by a local telling stories to a tourist........

Frankie,
If you make it this far - all the way to the end - you're less than a mile from my house. Let me know and I'll buy you a beer at Chez Jay's, a great local watering hole.

Many, many sad desolate small towns with decrepit gas stations, motels, restaurants and the like -- too many pictures to post. Ghosts of a bygone era..
Traveled pre-1932 Rt 66 south of McClean, TX this morning; drivers hated this because if it got muddy they were sure to get stuck - remember, no cell phones, nothing nearby, no AAA and little-to-no-traffic, very remote:
Staying in the Blue Swallow motel tonight in New Mexico - great if you have a classic car as you can park it in a garage next to your room.

That’s cool and you even got 100% refrigerated air to boot.

Frankie- Ted Simmons Chevrolet in McLean is where my blue 63 swc came from. It had some front end damage, and I remember seeing it setting back in the body shop, covered in dust. I used to buy my Chevy performance parts there. Ted was a good guy. He was known to order in an L72 short block for the L78 cars when we would eventually blow them up and get a warranty replacement. Most of the small town Chevy dealerships went out of business years and years ago.

Here is the Blue Swallow at dusk - the motel is completely full now and the music playing is from the motel (I didn't add it)....what a nostalgic rush!
