Default Route 66

Doing the "bucket list" trip - flew into Chicago Ohara and headed SW immediately jumping onto the old road. Have to say, if you don't have an eagle eye for the historic road signs you will get boogered up really fast. We blasted through to St. Louis stopping at some highlights and will do the "arch" today.... We aren't doing all of the old route though as we are going to do some Arizona/Utah things we missed on past trips... Thought I'd share pics of some old SUN tune up and test equipment for you lovers of vintage tech. Apparently, giant statues are a "thing" along the whole route....

There are a few rare, desolate stretches where you can get a feeling for the "Buzz and Todd" era (we are in a rented Ford Expedition)... Lots of chats with some "old timers" running the attractions -- clearly they do it for the love of the nostalgia because they aren't making any money at it.

I am glad you are enjoying the trip! Brings back great memories and I see you are making them also. My father and I went the Route back 5 yrs ago in his 1940 Ford Coupe. His knees were killing him but I convinced him to get out of the car here for the picture. He talked about that trip forever and if anyone is considering doing it, I say "DO NOT HESITATE". You never know when you will get a chance again. He passed away a couple years ago and the family loved this pic so much that they put in on his program at the funeral. Trip of a lifetime. Enjoy!

A few more - not even enough people about to get to take pictures of us both (sorta sad); the niece is home house-sitting with the split window (and her .357 magnum

Welcome to St. Louis

Enjoy your trip -- Be Safe

Here is a photo (1948) of my older sister and me with Original Route 66 behind us.
We stayed here with our grandparents every summer. This summer my sister got a new "SCHWINN" bicycle which we rode and rode and rode.
This was in Bourbon, Missouri. Building in background is Bourbon Lodge with it's little rental cabins.
That building is still there but now someone's home and only the first cabin still there.

Our middle son lived in Flagstaff for a while, so when we were visiting him we would drive out Route 66 in both directions once in a while to explore. Once you get away from any real population centers, it really is like a trip back in time. Wish I had my '62 with me - I would have put a luggage rack, some period suitcases and a bedroll on the back and let 'er roll . . . .

Thanks for the pics. These are great to see.

How far are you planning to drive the Mother Road? If you make it to LA, give me a shout and I'll buy you lunch.

Default Rt. 66

Frank when you went through Springfield, IL you passed right by my house. I'm 2 minutes off of I-55. Could of seen my Red-Red SWC. I also could of showed you some 66 stuff that is not on the tourist maps.

And here we sit in Kissimmee this week. When you hit Texas don’t miss the U-Drop Inn and Magnolia gas station in Shamrock.

Frank, I worked out of Clinton Oklahoma many times before I retired, then took the wife through there in 2012 so she could see where I had been. Clinton has a Rt 66 museum and at the time we were there they had C-2 displayed (altho they rotate the displays). Pedro's in Clinton has great Mexican food. Have a safe and fun trip!!

Spending today at the arch. Started construction a few months before my split window did. A damned amazing feat given the technology of the times.

Not going the whole way - flying home out of Vegas. Did the California thing a couple of years back.

Very nice pictures Frankie, Keep the pic's coming. I would love to do that trip one day even if it wasn't in the Vette. Hats off to the people who are trying to maintain the history of '66' and not really making any money at it. I noticed a Sun distributor machine in one of the pics. Was that there for decoration or is it actually usable?

George,
The proprietor gal said all the stuff worked when it went offline decades ago. No, the SUN distributor machine isn’t for sale. Yes, I asked - the lady just laughed; she gets offers all the time.

Hopefully sometime soon, I'll have a distributor machine on its way. In the meantime, I have that same Sun O-scope unit.

Default Iconic St. Louis Route 66 Stops

Frankie,
You might want to check out Ted Drew's Frozen Custard (6726 CHIPPEWA ST. LOUIS, MO 63109) and the Big Chief Roadhouse (17352 Manchester Road Wildwood, MO). Two iconic Route 66 stops in the St. Louis area.

Here are a few views from Okla.
This a very old steel truss bridge just west of Sapulpa, OK (first town west of Tulsa). Notice the brick paving. The railroad bridge is (was) the Frisco Railroad (now BNSF). You can still drive over it. When west bound, on the west side of Sapulpa, slow down and start watching for it (on the right when west bound)

An old drive-in movie theater just west of the bridge above. This section of Rt66 is very old, narrow, and has a few bumps, but it is still driveable.

This is the round barn in Arcadia, OK (on Rt66 east of Edmond, OK).

This is an old Rt66 steel truss bridge crossing the North Canadian river just before it flows into Lake Overholser on the west side of Okla City (you can still drive over it).

I don't have pictures, but Ft Reno is open during the day time during the week. It is just a few miles west of the town of El Reno, OK (west of OKC). It is mentioned in a few old western movies and was used in WWII for confining German POWs (and some wanted to stay in the USA after the war).
