Default 66 soft top issue

The passenger side rear pin won't stay in the latch. It pops right back out when I try to push it in. Driver side is okay. Is there an adjustment? New parts??

Regards,
Jerry

Do you snap the rear in the deck before you latch at the front, The same thing would happen to me with my 65, I would latch the front first and push the pins in second, almost always the drivers side would pop up, Im sure there might be some wear but I reversed the process , push the pins in the deck than latch at the front , and the drivers side stays put, with pushing the pins in the deck first you get to really push as far down as needed to have it catch, than when I latch at the front it stretches out top nicely >

the procedure is to loosely latch the front and then snug down the rear pins, then latch the front tight.

No dice. Won't latch even with the front totally loose. Just pops right out.

Does the pin look worn, or inside the catch assembly, I don't think there is much of an adjustment if any, maybe another member can confirm that.

if the top's been down for a while, you're probably going to have to put it out in the sun and let the top heat up and stretch a little bit to make it stay down.

The hold-down pins can be moved/adjusted left or right by loosening the two attaching machine screws. Similarly, there's also a small amount of freedom available regarding the position of the deck lid locks by loosening the clamp & forward attaching machine screw. Worth a try ...

Check the the catch on the deck lid, and make sure that it's moving freely. If it's tight or binding, try some white grease or WD40 on the catch, to see if it will move more freely.

If the catch moves freely, you probably need a new rear bow lock pin. The pins are die cast, which is a soft metal, while the catch is machined from steel, which is much harder. The pins wear from use, loosing their edge, and then they won't stay latched. New pins are around $30, but make sure you get the correct one, because rights and lefts are different.

The first thing I would do is to lengthen the pins by backing them out. Make sure the the pin is engaging in the middle of the latch. Also, make sure the cable is not sticking and keeping the latch partially open.

Problem solved! At a car show today and put the top up because of possible rain. I latched the front first then the back. Both sides stayed in! Sort of the opposite of Gavin65's experience.

Now all that I have to do is to fix the leaks at the top of the windshield .

Thanks all!

If you want to fix the leaks at the front, search for the thread about "center latch" or "third latch". I and some others have installed it on my '67 along with new weatherstripping. No more leaking. I do drive my car and have been in some heavy rain. Dennis
