Default 1965 Leaking Brakes

When I bought my 65 a year ago the left front and rear brakes leaked. The calipers looked great so I replaced the seals. About 6 months later, the rear one started leaking again. Disassembly shows the stainless steel sleeves to be good, but didn’t want to risk it again, so ordered a new caliper which I will install today.
Anybody have a recurring problem like this? Bad seals, leaking past sleeve, etc.?

Do your calipers have the lip seals or were they changed to o-rings?

Check the rotor run out on the rear rotors. If it exceeds .006 you may be pumping air into the system which could cause your leak. I installed O-ring pistons and seals on both my 66 and 68 coupes years ago and have not experienced any problems. Do a search as this topic has been discussed many times. Jerry

the seals have to seal against both the bore and the pistons. If the pistons are corroded and pitted, new seals won't hold.

New seals, new pistons and new SS bores should be leak free for years.

Good question! They are lip seals but I wish I had got 0 rings. Are the calipers the same? I assume the pistons are different, can you just buy those?

There are o-ring conversion kits. You should be good to go with that if your calipers are SS sleeved.

Thanks! But who has them? Napa & O’Reillys don’t.

Lone Star Caliper in Texas and CSSB, Inc. in Florida are two.

We had the same problem with R66. Both rear calipers leaked when the car set in the winter unless I pumped the brakes once a week. I rebuilt the calipers with new lip seals. The calipers appeared to be SS sleeved. Still had the weep when the car set. Drove the car on a 200 mile + cruise and the right rear caliper locked up. Removed the caliper and checked the runout on the disc and found it within spec. Finally disassembled the caliper again and found it was over bored beyond GM specs. The pistons were rocking in the bore and sucking in air as well as not releasing. I had not checked the bore ID when I rebuilt them.
We replaced both rear calipers with o-ring calipers from Lone Star. Eliminated the problem.
