Ghosts of the past
I took the Green Machine out today on a jount into the central Virginia countryside. I went to a shopping mall about 10 miles away for Cars/Coffee, and also made a stop at a couple of battlefields on the outskirts of Richmond. I listened for the ghosts of Johnnie Reb and Federal soldiers running through the fields and woods. I know those ghosts were out there with me. There is lots of civil war history around my neck of the woods.

I didn't give a crap about history when I was in school, but absolutely love it now. I agree there's a spirit in those battlefields that's not found elsewhere.
Also interesting is the feeling we get driving these old Corvettes. They definitely take you back in time, yours took you 100 year so farther back.

Living in VA., history is everywhere. Usually just after dark I can hear The Gray Ghost and his men riding though my property on his way to Middleburg or other hiding spots dotted around our county....
Touring the countryside in the Corvette is the best. Gotta love Virginia.

Nice to have all that history close by. Your 65 looks great Don I didn't know you went from Goldlines to blackwalls? I went through the blackwall faze for a while but ended up going back to goldlines. Looks good though.

I love visiting all those battlefields back east. Doing my family genealogy, many of my ancestors were there in various places during that time. Some came home, some didn't, but the places are fantastic to visit and try to visualize what it was all about.

Loved history as a kid, love it more now. Been all over the country visiting as much of it as possible. High Horse: how do you like your new digs compared to CALI? A bunch, I'm betting.....Hot, dry, and smokey here....going on our 25th or 26th day in a row of over 100 temps (actually, 100 would be NICE...it's averaging 104-ish).

The car looks great Don. I'm a few home projects away from squirting that same green on my 65. I changed my mind 1000 times over blackwall, whitewall or gold lines. Then I saw this pic. and decided to with whitewalls and knock-offs.

Thanks fellas. VA countryside is gorgeous, and it is livable especially compared to CAL. But there are obvious things that a So CAL transplant must accept and get used to such as copious amounts of rain, and humidity. With those comes bugs. You take the steps to mitigate those things, and don't dwell on them. There is oh so much upside!
I miss the CAL I grew up in, but not the one I left. I don't at all miss the heat of So CAL summers in the SFV, nor the god-forsaken Santa Ana winds that used to only come in Oct, but now fly from about February to December. I like yards with green grass in them, rather than gravel and cactus. And the devastating wild fires, like those burning now? No thank you, I feel for the lives, flora, and fauna lost every year. I like paying utility bills, car registration, auto and HO insurance bills in the $100s of dollars rather than in the multi-$1000s. Need I say more? Oh yes, I should also mention that a nice home on acreage with room for a car garage is achievable here for even a former workaday schlub like me.
My car garage under construction, and speaking of the grey ghost, here is the ultimate Grey Ghost, Maj General James E. B. (Jeb) Stuart, Commander of 1st Virginia Cavalry Corps, killed at age 31 during the Overland Campaign of 1964. I look for his ghost galloping through my woods with red plumed hat, and sword, and cape flying.

Looks great, Don. Lots of great history, and soon a really serious garage.
They let you run your California plates there?

Well, looks like you’re enjoying life here in Virginia. I know I would never live anywhere else.
Just be careful, deer populations are high...
BTW, nice Corvette, nice shop/garage and you’re living in a great area.

thanks Dan, it sure seems like heaven on earth (in many ways).
and Todd, they seem to have bigger fish to fry than bother me over my CAL plates. Though I'm not sure what the fish are. No one has stopped me yet. I'm titled and registered here, but kept my old plates, and have not gone to the trouble to switch them out. And I don't plan to.

One morning a couple years ago, a friend and I were cruising down RT 95 at 85 mph on our way to a Super Chevy show south of Richmond, in our Z/28’s. A Trooper pulled up along side gave us a thumbs up and kept on booking. Gotta love it...

My first job out of college was in Newport News, Va. I loved exercising on the Yorktown battlefield. I'd be running and seeing Layfayette's encampment, and other Revolutionary War earthworks, etc. Then you go another 100 yards there are monuments honoring Union and Confederate soldiers. Confused the heck out of me. Until I did some reading..... Revolutionary War AND Civil War both fought at Yorktown. So much history. Love Virginia and your car. Cheers

VA. police won’t bother you and if they do pull you over, be prepared to talk “CARS”, they just want to look/see and talk cars.

PS - I thought this guy was the original "Gray Ghost". I love all history, especially military, and remember reading about Col. Mosby a loooooong time ago!
