Is Karl Kustom Corvettes' C2 Replica Better than the Real Thing?
By Brian Dally

Would you rather have a '67 or something more modern that just looks like one?

Karl's is a longtime Chevy dealer and racer here in Des Moines., so I've seen a couple of these "customs" of his running around town the last couple of ears. They honestly just look strange. I can understand the appeal to a small niche audience, because they are very unique, but I wouldn't put my money on the table for one of them.

I’m guessing “no” would be the expected answer to that question, here in the C2 section.

That doesn't "just look like one?" by any stretch of the imagination to me.

Karl Performance closed a few weeks ago and has been sold, so presumably his ability to build more of these “classics” is gone forever.

One day I will have a C2 on a C5 frame.......... but the C2 better look like a freaking C2. That Windshield makes it look like a crappy Fiero Kit car............. and I like Fieros.

It’s not a C2 - it’s a C5 with a custom body. End of discussion.

I thought they were staying open until October and then closing the doors. The website is still up.

For those who haven't ever been inside the shop area, it's a car guy's dream come true of equipment.

Nope - closed means closed. The original announcement said they’d be open through the end of the year, and many of us were hoping for a big sale on inventory and equipment. But it looks like he just got the check, locked the doors and flipped the keys to the new owner:

”Karl Performance would like to announce the sale of Karl Performance to KMJ Performance in Story City Iowa on 8/1/2018. The sale includes the Victory Chassis, Engine Shop, Custom shop, and Karl Performances inventory servicing all Karl Performance. KMJ Performance has 85,000 square feet of warehouse space at its Story City location and another 25,000 square feet at its Ames Warehouse with walk-in stores at both locations. The walk in location of Karl Performance in Des Moines has been closed. All online orders at Karls Performance will be handled immediately the toll free number will be rolling over to the sales offices in Story City, Do not throw away your Karl Performance catalogs as they are still good as part numbers and pricing will not change.”

I'm thinking somebody else's money and/or patience ran out....

scratch that, he has more money than he could spend in 10 lifetimes....must have been his patience...
