But, as opportunity costs go, that's a lot cheaper than buying them yourself.

Do you have a garage to store your dad's corvettes when he gives them to you?? Being outside all year will age the Corvette very fast and you will have many more mechanical problems. Rodent problems can also be a new issue.

not yet but when the wife and I where looking at houses the requirement was to have land to build a garage when the time comes. there is no way any of our old cars will sit outside

I'm bringing this one back from near death. The classic "brought it home in boxes" story.

Why? Its an original black on red '63. And yes - it will go back to black when completed.

Many of my Corvettes have been black. I love black on Corvettes. I bought Daytona Blue on my last car, which is pretty close to black. If you love dark colors, you deal with upkeep, like women with long hair.

However, if the only reason you are considering painting it black is because it’s the original color, I think you are way off. I’m usually nuts about having the color matching the trim tag, but if you are talking about a restomod there’s simply no point in being concerned with colors matching tags. It doesn’t matter any more.

Paint it black because you love it and it looks great. Not for any other reason.

When I got my car it was this candy apple red, and i didn't know squat about what paint code meant, or trim tags... eventually I looked into the trim tag, & I thought I read the code that it was supposed to be black, and I was pretty excited about that as I love black cars. I looked forward to the day I could paint it, and get it to its original black color. This lasted for a few years...

Turns out, I'm an idiot, and someone looked at my trim tag that had a C2, and said: "So it was originally Riverside Red?
I replied: "no, it was black"
Anyway, they were right...
So I never painted it!!
I would for sure go with black in your case.

x2.

Black only looks good when its flawless have to be careful what you wash/dry it with, dusting frequently etc. Plus they are hot as hell inside, way more than silver.
After 4 black cars in a row Ill never own one again not into detailing.
GM Onyx black is a nice shade also, paint it what YOU like, dont worry about the internet or some buyer youve never met. Youll regret it if you do-

Noone is going to look at a black vette when they want a red one & ask for a 10k discount cause it isnt original. Lots of buyers for any color out there.

Black with a red interior has to be the classiest color combo of all, IMO. Hard to keep clean or not, well worth it. If I ever repaint my Roman Red/Red interior '61, I just may change it to black. Very elegant and classy color for a classic, and really shows off the lines.

Black is a personal favorite, and my 63' is originally black, but with late-60's metal flake blue on the original black, and late-70's sunburst yellow over the blue, and mid-80's black lacquer over the yellow. The yellow is a pain because whoever painted the color was prone to overspray and it shows with rock chips, but it's thirty years old and still a reasonable twenty footer. The beauty of lacquer is it never fully hardens and heals itself to hide light scratches. After wax removal and a rub down with kerosene lacquer will lay down and restore that fluid glaze with a polish and wax.

For a coupe, I may need AC.

Black is pretty nice on a Midyear as it was a fairly rare color when ordered new. But some of those unusual OEM colors that GM offered that carried some metallic to them are terrific looking. When I was first shopping for a coupe I definitely wanted a metallic color, it helps bring out alla' those sexy-*** curves on that gorgeous shape of a body.
