Default 64 rear differential plug

What type of wrench or socket can you get on that plug? Someone said a 5/8" 8pt socket! They are nowhere to found around here.

I got a set of 4 8-pt sockets from Sears, online IIRC - they are also useful on transmission fill/drain plugs...

Frankie, can you copy and paste that for me? Are they Craftsman or other?

Correct, an 8-point socket is what is needed. Sears USED to carry them, but not so much any more. 8pt sockets are almost non existent these days. Not long ago I found a set of 6 online.

The 63-64 plugs were a machine thread plug with larger heads then the 65 -79 3/4 npt plugs. You may find the 8 pt won't work but an adjustable should loosen it up. There was a gasket behind them too.

I put it up on jack stands. The filler plug came out with ease using a 7/8" 12 pt socket, not a 5/8". This is a 64 vette. The square plug measures roughly 11/16", but a 11/16 would not work. Now off to Home depot to plumb the $4 drill pump to get the fluid out and then on to the tranny. How much fluid does the differential and tranny take? Notsure what the local O'Rielly sells. Also get a tube of posi additive.

Thanks for posting this as I do not have these. The one in the link shows out of stock but I did find this set on Amazon for $38.

Also worth noting that impact sockets are all 8 point, it is where I found a socket to fit the plug on my ‘63. If you have air and are without a set of these perhaps it’s time to buy!

Castrol also makes the 80-90 wt gear oil with the posi additive in it.

If the plug has a square, a 12-pt socket will work, something on the order of 13/16", but I forgot the actual size that fits.
