Better a paper clip than a nail slid thru and then bent so that it’s damn difficult to remove - which I have seen more than once!

I think if you check your NCRS Manual, that clip is supposed to be inserted from the opposite direction!

In defense of Bubba, it wasn't until somewhat later in life I put in a supply of cotterpins. Not every possible length variation, as long ones can be trimmed down, but i think i have most normal diameters, in stock. Now.
40 years ago, i didn't, i reused old ones, or made due with something as a trip to town was 7-8 miles one way. If I made due with something, i usually made it right in few days, though i have found some old unorthodox fixes, in out of the way places, over the years.

Who really cares in an out of sight area like that? Those types of things usually happen when you have an emergency and use what is available. I know I have done it and then forgot until I see that out of the way area again that reminds me to use the correct thing. That particular fix would likely last a lifetime as all it has to do is keep rod from coming off the end and there is no real pressure on it. Many times Bubba gets a bad rap.

Agree with both of you.
Also just got a large supply of cotter pins in stock in the last ten years.
When I used to reuse them, I would take care to bend them over in a different spot than first bent so they wouldn't snap off.
That paper clip could well be stronger than a cotter pin of the same size.

The hacksaw blade is a good one! I wonder how he drilled that, hacksaw blades are pretty hard. The wiring mess like that is pretty common.
