C1 starter engage

C1 starter engage
I recently changed the flywheel ,clutch and bellhousing in my 1960 corvette. This all started with a broken bolt hole on the bellhousing and the starter was binding when starting the car . Anyway, I got it all back together ,went to start it and now I'm he starter will not engage the flywheel. I didn't count the teeth on the old flywheel but I did put in a new 168 tooth wheel. The flywheel is very close to he starter and just hits the wheel without engaging , can someone help me out , what did I do wrong ?

Is the starter the same one you had before you changed the flywheel?
For a 1960, you should have a 14" diameter 168-tooth flywheel and a starter that has horizontal bolts to attach it to the bellhousing.

There only two possibilities: a) something is misaligned, or, b) the starter isn't engaging the flywheel with enough force...
If the rebuilder is local I would take the starter back and have them inspect it .... I have seen more than one bogus rebuild....
If that checks out then there is some issue with your flywheel install....
Did you 'flip' the ring gear or install a new flywheel ??

I have seen shops swap parts on people! You think you got your actual part back! I mark all of mine special!
I cant see how one bellhousings bolt in this story, started this problem! I think you had something already going on! One bolt stripped should not cause an entire bellhousings to move or what you describe!
Have you bench actuated the starter? Just put voltage to it and see if it is engaging, disengaging? I also suspect the spring pressure engagement!
I have put some machinists dye on parts to get an idea on how things are engaging! To speed up troubleshooting.

What is the state of your positive and negative battery cables? What is the state of your battery? I chased starter issues with my 61 for a while. I replaced both the positive and negative cables as well as the battery. My rebuilt, stock AC/Delco starter was not rebuilt properly. Brought it to a local, trusted auto electric shop and he rebuilt it properly. If it's aligned properly it's either the starter, wiring/grounds, the battery or a combination of all. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the replies , I'll pull the starter back off and bench check it . The reason I changed the bell housing was because the bottom bolt hole on the bellhousing was broken off and gone ,causing the starter to miss align with the flywheel. It had broken teeth off the ring gear and ground down the starter gear . I bought the car in this condition . It also had the incorrect bellhousing on it, it was a cast iron housing with lower side mounts . Again , thanks everyone for the info . I'll let you know what I figure out .
