crate motor hood clearance
I want to pull my original 327/350 hp motor in my 66 coupe and install a 350 vortec crate motor. I want 330-400 hp but everything I look at seems to be a hood (small block) clearance issue. Any suggestions ?

I would rebuild the L79 tweaked just right it will run better then the new crate motor. then all your accessory's will bolt right up

I’m just finishing up a Blueprint 383 stroker long block (430HP) install in my ’66 coupe
Will Accept Either An Early 12 Bolt Intake Manifold Or Late "Vortec" 8 Bolt Manifold
Straight Spark Plug Holes Use A .750" Reach Gasket Style Plug
Perimeter or Center Bolt Valve Cover Bolt Holes
Accessory Bolt Holes Machined On Ends Of Heads
I moved over original parts from my 327 (intake, starter, exhaust, valve covers) and added Holley Sniper FI.
I have BB hood but with GM intake (12 bolt) hood clearance is not a problem.

I am in the process of doing this now to my 66 with small block hood.. I am replacing my blown ZZ4 crate motor with the Chevy Performance 350/385 part number 19333157. Another forum member has this install and says it just fits. I do not know what hood clearance I had with the ZZ4 but Chevy performance says the above motor uses a dual plane intake that is about 1/2" taller than the ZZ4 intake. 350/385 also uses angled spark plugs like my old ZZ4 so hopefully I can reuse the block hugger headers.
I did not go with the ZZ6 motor because that required a 770 cfm carb and I wanted to reuse my Holley Street Avenger 670 CFM same as other forum member. The above motor is essentially the ZZ6 with dual plane intake and no roller rockers but same roller cam as ZZ6. You will need the 2" drop base Air Cleaner from your 66
I have also ordered the Weiand 8121 intake manifold for use with Vortec heads. It is about 1/2" shorter at the carb flange than the dual plane on the 19333157. Hedging my bet the stock manifold from 19333157 will fit.
The shop that is doing the work should be there in about a week.
PS the HEI distributors furnished with the crate motors wont fit. I had the MSD 8572 tach drive distributor in old ZZ4 which I will reuse

Thanks for the info & replies it really helps. My engine / drive train is original & was rebuilt at 92K miles with 28K miles on the rebuild. I want to set the current drive train aside and install something else.
I had not thought of the dist. being to tall so I will have check the HEI tach. drive that I have.
Thanks again for the info. it gives me a starting point.

I'ma do this 406hp roller valvetrain 9:1 to 1 327 (road draft tube and all) with a ported 490 intake manifold using the OEM finned valve covers and stock SB hood.
