Loud and lovin it.
My nosy neighbor comes walking over on my driveway tonight and he says "hey, you can't drive that old corvette with that exhaust so loud. I heard it last night and it was really loud, you need to do something about it".
My response...."hey sorry buddy that wasn't the Vette, I didn't drive it last night... that came from the Harley".
No joke.

BTW, my 85 year old next door neighbor lady says she loves hearing my car start up.

I can't imagine a neighbor coming over and making such a comment out of the blue like that. What a moron. I do limit the hours I drive the Vette though to after 9 in the morning.

if it is a regular occurrence and it is happening pretty late at night he has a legit beef.
If it is rare then he needs to shut up.
I have straight pipes on one of my Harleys and I wont run it after 9pm or before 9am and even then I ease it down the street.

I agree sort of.
I live in a subdivision where, due to the proximity to the turnpike and the housing boom, is now full of children of all ages being pushed in strollers, walking or bike riding... EVERYbody in the 75 houses in the neighborhood knows my cars. I don't "hot dog" it through the narrow streets or rev the engines like crazy and life is easier for everybody. They all know I work on my cars and help them with theirs sometimes....I've owned my property for 20 years and don't need an HOA or the cops down on my butt for being obnoxious or dangerous.

My C2 is reasonably silent , standard back pipes, 250hp-style muffler. I have a cobra with sidepipes that is loud as hell.
For every stupid neighbour (none around here) that complains after 1 loud late/early entry/departure, there are many other neighbours that are too nice to complain even if our cars were disturbing them beyond the acceptable.
So, for my silent C2 8AM/10PM is the limit, for my Cobra rather 8AM/9PM. Once a year I take the cobra out for a trip with the Cobra club. That one leaves at 7.30AM, I warn the neighbours in advance. On a regular base, I invite neighbours and their kids for a short trip , that helps too as a peace keeping mission, and it's fun

Some of my neighbors got together and tried to start an HOA. I can't stand HOAs and I will not have any part of one. The guy that wanted to head it up is my next door neighbor. Some in the pro group were riding around the neighborhood slowly and taking pictures of everything they wanted to complain about. One person didn't have a paved or concrete drive and they said we'll have an attourney handle stuff like that. I was really afraid they might get this through until I started going door to door on the other end of the neighborhood. Everyone on that end didn't know me but they said we'll sign a proxy for you to vote for us. Then we had a meeting in a church about it. Everyone got finished speaking for the pro side. And I'm sure they thought when I got up I was going to as well and let me tell you some of these people were quite avid about this. When we were finished and I was leaving there were people lining the exit on both sides that hadn't spoken. They all were waiting to shake my hand and say we are with you. We do have restrictive covenants but at least one person has done their part to make sure everyone of them is broken. I'll never know for sure but I believe it got started about me letting my granddaughter ride a buggy in my yard. There are 2 guys that have businesses at their house and they were for sure aimed at them. I talked to them early on and they both said we have permits from the city. I thought well you may have em but you still can't have a business at your house and they are coming after you. One of the ladies riding around had a beauty salon attached to her house but she told the others oh I was grandfathered in. Wrong I was here before her house was built and the convenants say no businesses. Fortunately the con side prevailed and all is good. I'm not ever going to someone else's property and tell them what or how they should do things and I sure as hell don't want them doing it to me! And still to this day the guy next door comes over and gets me to fix any and everything that breaks.

If you don't like an HOA then don't buy into a neighborhood that has one, if you do -- know the rules....
A properly run HOA with reasonable covenants can protect property values.....so you don't have the guy parking an 18-wheeler at his house next door or having grass waist deep....
I've lived next to the guy who ran a body shop out of his garage banging and air-wrenching at 1 am while my infant daughter was trying to sleep...when his pit bull lunged at my daughter through the fence once I told the owner if it happened again I'd fix it so he could look himself in the eye. Problem solved.
That's all I'll say here about it before it gets ugly.

I did buy in a neighborhood with no HOA. But the progress came and took its toll. Now I'm in the city. Apparently the majority of neighbors agreed with me. I'm a more than reasonable person. When doing months of fiberglass repairs with constant air tools working I took it to a friends shop so as not to offend anyone. Everyone on our end of the neighborhood comes to my house for everything, lawnmower broken can you fix it, AC is down do you have any parts, and so on. I do keep extra AC parts on hand. What I can't stand is someone telling me what they think I "HAVE" to do.

There's always some crank finding things to complain about. As much fun as it is to get in the faces of cranks, seems to me Alexander has a good first time approach. After that, if the crank still complains, well you're within the law and tried to be nice about it. That's all you can do. Save the sledgehammer for when you need it.

I remember in one neighborhood I lived in years ago, one of those middle-aged nosy matrons came around after I had finished cutting the grass and said, "You know, we rake our grass clippings around here." I told her the rake was in the garage, help yourself. Last time she spoke to me, so it ended well.

If your covenants haven't been enforced for years, then they are basically worthless as precedent has now been set and enforcing them or other ones now would be almost impossible. All someone would need to do is document all the ones not enforced and claim they are being harassed with "selective" enforcement.

The problem is that some people have to work shifts and need to sleep when you are revving your loud pipes all hours of the day and night . You just have to keep that in mind when you start your vehicles . This is coming from someone that owns both a Corvette and Harley and I used to work shift work . Just be considerate !

Loud Harleys, in my life experience, are ridden 99% of the time by A$$holes. They have a third grade mentality, like attention, and like to bully people with decibels. The 21 carrot SOB's have a loud exhaust AND a stereo on the bike cranked up on 11, as well. You can hear these class acts a mile away.

I try to drive as slowly and quietly as I can when going through my neighborhood. However, if anyone has their car parked at the curb with the anti-theft alarm set, my sidepipes will set off the alarm. But I only drive my car during daylight hours so I’m not creating a huge problem.
