quickie update i swapped out the mech vr with the vr-715 that i removed due to way over voltage and it did the same thing it was doing when i took it out (overvoltage ) , i opened up the mechanical vr and it looked clean as a whistle , so now ill check the alt in the way buns recommended and see what gives , i guess that'll tell me for sure if its the vr or not , ill keep ya posted thanks

I have read all the posts in thisvthread; I had an amp gage that was showing 0 charging with the engine started (i just finished the restoration). Did all the troubleshooting steps and narrowed it down to the VR. I go to pull the gang connector off, and the end spade from the VR was on the OUTSIDE of the plastic cover. I misaligned it. Good call Frankie!! Now everything works. Good thread.

ran the test according to buns post all good , just ordered a new vr , hopefully this will solve my issue , i suspect that that g------d wheel disconnect was possibly arcing and affected the present and past vr's, will update with results later .

Well. Glad you found it the easy way, without pushing your car home. Ugh!

Test voltages sound like the plug is not disconnected from the regulator. Unplug and retest

#2 on reg W/b stator indicates diode leakage in alternator . The rest seem good. F on the reg (blue) should be 0 but .004 is close enough. Reg left to right terminals F field blue, #2 stator b/w, #3 ignition b/p, #4 battery, red. 3 and 4 should be close to bat voltage which they are. Replace leaking diode.

Im thinking at this point especially because im adding a/c i should probably just go with a new alt , after testing and running yesterday the alt was pretty hot which seemed abnormal to me . Thank you for helping with the diagnosis , i sure appreciate the help .
