Very unfortunate accident situation that no classic owner needs to endure. Yes the car can be fixed but my heart really goes out to your wife being the car was such a big part of her and her dads life. Such a high level of personal attachment to her dads car can’t be understood by some.

I’m sorry this happened but overall glad no one was hurt.
A friend here once told me “he who blinks first in an insurance deal, loses.”
since hagerty is subrogating to the at fault agency push even harder. I would certainly ask for and get my car stripped and painted in the estimate.
When i was hit I also had old lacquer and there was NO way to blend new paintwork into it. Before the wreck my car matched and I was entitled to have it match again.
If your paint is original you have an even stronger case- it would be easy to say you have lost measurable value in the accident.
Push. Good luck.

What chaps my cheeks is that the other insured party in this incident did the right thing and carried insurance at least.....even if their errant driving caused the wreck. They and every other insured driver pays the premium for the burden of the cretins that drive around with no insurance with no assets to protect and then drive like idiots to boot (27% of drivers in Florida are uninsured).
Like the "new American" that hit me in an illegally registered car with zero insurance, so no deep pockets to go after for diminished value or other compensatory damages - had to get that off my chest. And then this irresponsible person tried to collect personal injury and property damage money from me.
To wit, as tragic as this is, the OP is lucky the other person was at least responsible enough to be insured.

Chevrolet wasn't the only one to offer seat belts in the early 50's... take this '53 Ford sedan for example...

A good body man will obsess over getting the gaps right - and the true test in a front end damage situation is how the gaps look around the headlight buckets with them closed AND OPEN.
Sometimes the bucket geometry is only addressed to get them to look nice in the closed position...and when they are rotated up things go to crap...because the rotational hardware was not properly repaired and configured....and the buckets' shape is not congruent..

I finally got the estimate from the appraisal company. It seems to me to be a bit low based on other people's experiences but it has not been assessed by an experienced C2 shop yet. I'm still waiting for them to give me a list of recommended shops. The estimate lists the repair shop as the place it was towed to but i am definitely not going to have the work done at a general auto body shop. Any thoughts?
