The car had air shocks in the rear. I hated the look of the shackles from the rear. Don’t use them. The fastback went to a new owner int 1998 when I moved to Wash DC. He paid the asking price without question after I took him for a “performance ride”. I don’t think I’ve heard the phrase “Oh sh*t!” so many times in a row. The car had Shelby suspension mods and would do a nice 4 wheel drift when lowered.

Guilty as charged !
We used to call that "raked". Don't know what, if anything, they call that style today.

The first gen Mustangs had horrible wheel hop on launch because the rear axle would “wind up”.

Some thought the shackles helped with this. I’m skeptical. The real solution was staggered rear shocks on later generations.

These were under every Camaro in my high school parking lot.
Except, I remember them as being yellow.

My '70 T/A Challenger came stock with what MoPar called 'super stock' springs, hands down the best leaf springs of the day in terms of minimizing wheel hop / wrap up. Regardless, I still had a pair of slapper bars

It was a double-edged sword: you needed to lift the back end to clear the huge back tires (L-60 or N-50 bias ply), nobody was 'tubbing' cars then, or narrowing rear ends. My '66 GTO had Gabriel Hi-Jackers and Lakewood ladder bars...without the bars, and lifted, wind-up was severe. A stock '66 GTO, running low on stock wheels, very little wheel hop. My '66 Coronet with a 440 and a 4 speed, actually had a factory adjustable snubber bushing on the shout of it's Dana Sure Grip rear end. You could fine tune it easily with a jamb nut. Great design. That 440 with the 833 4 speed, bench seat, and 3.23 posi out back was a LOT of fun, especially on freeway on-ramps, prior to them having a red light installed at their ends.

And Thrush or Cherry Bomb mufflers!

First thing I did to my 1964 Mercury Comet in high school was shackles followed by headers and Cherry Bombs! Woo Hoo!

My high school parking lot was full of jacked up Novas and Chevelles, considered very cool by most pimply faced teenagers of the day. Here's what I was driving on my 16th birthday:

Yeah Frankie, I like the old fastbacks. My neighbor is putting together a '66 on a rolling race chassis with a 2003 Cobra 4 valve supercharged engine. Beautiful car making about 550 hp.

I asked my mechanic to give me a 1/4 inch rake on my stance while he was doing the alignment! So it is rake for me. I am not a fan of jacked up rear end. Lowered with a rake!

What era was the jacked up rear ends? I had new GTO in 64 and 65 and we all raised the fronts with spring spacers. Stock cars at drag strips had slightly raised fronts in the 60's! Not as high as straight axle gassers. Thought is it helped weight transfer.

That red fastback was sporting D00E 351 heads on the stock 289 bottom end which basically made it a "street Boss"... larger valves and smaller combustion chambers and a 650 Holley double pumper on top... Front "A" arms lowered one inch, quick steering adapter, rear sway bar and larger front sway bar...Shelby-ized.

A quick, nimble, fun car I wish I had kept...

Most prevalent in the early 70's.
