270 hp correct oil pan?
Can anyone tell me which is the correct oil pan for the 1959 270 HP 2x4carbs? I've been told it's different from the low HP engines.
I tried to post pics of examples but couldn't
I guess I'm stupid. I can not attach photos. I can't even reply to MikeM. I'm so damn tired of nothing working right. I wish I had never bought the car..
Thanks

Which two are you talking about? The 270 should be a trap door pan.

Desert Pilgrim is a resident expert here on those pans. Maybe he can help?

It was called a trap door pan. Here are some pictures of a later service replacement. It's a little different than the originals, but I don't remember the exact difference, but I don't think it was much different.
Good luck with finding one at a reasonable price. The pictures in the attached are of one that was on Ebay and the seller wanted $2,000. I managed to fine a pretty beat up one for $450 and repaired it. That was in 2011.

If I remember correctly, the actual "trap door" did not get installed in PRODUCTION solid lifter Corvette oil pans until about the 61-62 models.
ALL the service replacement pans for 57-62 solid lifter engines did have the trap door.
I bought 2 of these pans when they were still available back in the early 70s.
Here is one of them.
In 1963, the "long sump" pan was introduced on the solid lifter engines. It was also a trap door pan------------------which will also fit in ANY 55-62 Corvette with a SB---------------that's what I have in the 56 with a SB400, and it also has the fast steering adapter..

You very well might be right about the trap door starting in production in '61-'62.
I have a pan that looks very close to your photos on my '63, This "Pilgrim" guy Id'd my pan as a '59 Corvette if I remember right when he was still on another forum.. Didn't say anything about it being service replacement but it could have been. I've had it for years but don't remember where it came from.
I bought a pump pickup for a '59 pan and it worked so I never questioned what it was.

Tom's first six (6) pictures are of #3769761 issued in 1960 and 1961 for high lift camshaft engines. Two spot welds on the 2nd step, four spot welds on the front face of the 3rd step and three on each side of the 3rd step hold the trap door and three more on each side of the 3rd step hold the side baffles. This pan disappears from the Pts Bks in October 1961 and #3789629 is assigned for ALL 1957-62 applications. The side baffles and the door are the keys.

I've been trying to reply for over two hours. When I type a few words my computer locks up.
Thanks to everyone for the info. I've learned a lot. I now know my engine did not have an oil pan with a trap door. But, I still don't know how to identify the original oil pan for my "1959" 270 HP engine.
Desertpilgrim can you please tell how to identify an original oil pan for my 1959 270HP 2x4 carbs with solid lifters. What does it look like on the outside (how many indentations) and inside baffles, etc. And if you can, what is the part number and where is it stamped?
I would appreciate it tremendously.
Thank you.
