Re; the Renault spare tire,
The spare tire was the original air bag.
My 1974 Motor Coach Industries MC5B has one in the same space.
It actually is an airbag as it sat just in front of the main suspension and would transfer the front end impact directly to the strongest part of the coach.

C1 of Year Finalist (performance mods) 2019
I sold for an AMC--Dodge dealership from 1968-1974 in a small town with a county population of less than 20,000 (read rural area.) Part of my sales pitch to the farmers on the Gremlin was that we sell them for less than $1. per pound.

I am with Frankie and CorvetteMike. The 1950 Studebaker is very unique and in the eyes of the beholder a very futuristic and very pretty looking car. I will love to have one, very expensive. There are other Studebaker models that are outstanding. My vote for ugliest is the old Citroens, they look like cockroaches with wheels. They will make good cars for an exterminating company.

Maybe I had an overactive imagination as a kid, but, to me, Studebakers always resembled the looks of a rodent [minus the tail and whiskers].

With all the discussion about the Renault Dauphine, I do have to agree with GTOguy that it was not necessarily an ugly car - just a mechanical nightmare.
TRIVIA CHALLENGE: Hopefully all of you are aware of what the Renault Dauphine was SUPPOSED to be named? It carried this name all through development, but it was changed just before it was introduced. If you know why, you know what the original name was.
