Burning Brakes
First Corvette Experience
The year - 1959
My age - 9 years old
Set up - Older Brother's friend get a 1958 Corvette - Bill
Bill comes over to show it off
I ask for a ride
Friend has me get in - I am excited
Then the idiot pops the clutch to do a burn out .. (I'm 9 years old!)
My head hits the upper stainless seat surround and cracks my head good
I was NOT a happy camper!

When the '78 Corvette was announced there was a tremendous amount of hype over it, especially the Pace Car version. I remember that the Wall Street Journal claimed that Pace Cars would be worth $75,000 within a year. My dad got caught up in this and decided to buy a Corvette. He didn't want to buy a new one, so we started looking at used '76 or '77 cars locally (we lived in Los Angeles). Over the course of a year he hadn't found one to his liking, but his mother told him about a guy near her (in Delaware) that was selling a '78. My dad agreed to buy it, and he and I flew to Delaware to get it. I was 15 years old, so I couldn't drive, but my first real exposure to the Corvette was driving that '78 across the country.
I still have a picture of that car sitting here at my desk as I type this.

I grew up around Army bases...so musclecars were everywhere....along with some Vette's. I certainly knew what they were and drooled on them in the late 60's when I was 8-9 years old...but in 1969 we moved to GA. A cousin was off in Vietnam and had his C-3 stored under a carport at his Dad's place next to the little country store we went to regularly. I stared at it a LOT. Soon after...my older sister's boyfriend bought a blue '72 with a 350/4speed and took me for a ride. WOW...sitting there looking out over that mile long hood made a lasting impression while going through the gears.
But a few years later we had moved again and my buddy's older brother had a white '64 with small lip flares and a small rear spoiler. It had a 327 with 12.5 compression, 4 speed and 4.11's. THAT one really made me fall in love with C-2's. It screamed and just flat looked cool. As soon as I graduated High School I found an orange '64 with small lip flares to buy and was the coolest kid in town!!
