My stepmother had a mud brown '71 Pinto with a 2000 cc and a 4 speed and I used to drift the hell out of that car up in the Oakland and Berkeley hills. It handled like a slot car and was a joy to drift on those tiny bias ply tires. This was about 1977-78. Great times. Always liked Pintos, hated Vegas. When I became a mechanic a year later or so, I REALLY hated Vegas. Absolute crap.

The optional OHC 2.0L was German made while the base pushrod 1.6L was English. Mine has the 2.0L and ran well with a milled head, cam, headers, 4.11 gears etc. Sadly...mine has sat at a buddy's place for many years and has acquired a good bit of patina. Fortunately it's just surface rust and the car is actually solid overall. It's on the "to-do list" to do something fun with.

Funny story on the Chevette - when Chevrolet got handed the Chevette program, it came with the 1.4L 4-cylinder engine used in Brazil. There wasn't much time to get the details going, so Chevrolet Engineering sent a Spanish-speaking translator to Brazil to sort out the engine drawings, notes, dimensions, and process details for Flint V-8 (where the Chevette 1.4L engine would be built), but he came home right away - they speak PORTUGUESE in Brazil, not Spanish.
