1961 mystery holes
i have 2 holes at the rear wheel well area on both sides of the car. These holes go through to the trunk and look like a bracket of some sort was mounted there. Does anyone know what these are intended for? Body is off frame and the photo is the left wheel well area.

Yes, and don't close up those holes under the gas tank compartment ! (this comes up occasionally) -- they are there for a purpose.
To wit, so you aren't driving around with fuel vapors in the enclosed gas tank area..

I get the 3 hole ventilation but are they loosely covered by something (if so what) or simply covered by the tank?
What about the 4" holes on each side, or were these added to my 62 after it left the factory? I get the fuel line goes through on the right side but that doesn't take a 4" hole. No idea what it was used for on the left side.
TIA
Robert

61 and 62 with 24 gallon ''BIG TANK'' option. The tank needed more space, so the cut away the bulkhead from the factory. Here it has been filled in after the car received a standard 16 gallon tank. Only 25 cars in 61 and 65 cars in 62 had the big tanks. USED FOR RACING mostly. If your 61has these holes, show me more.

This was not a big tank car or anything else special about it, at least as far as I can tell. These holes are on the bottom of the fuel tank area. Should have attached the pic in the first place, Thanks

Jim,
Several things: the black tank by the yellow car in previous pictures is a 37-gallon solid axle tank, not a 24. The dirty gray is a 24. Also, in all the solid axles I have worked on, I have never seen cloth below a tank. I've seen the factory-installed tar paper strips between the tank and the underbody, but never any cloth. I am not sure what you are referring to.
Regards,
Mike Ernst

Also - to the OPs question - no small holes inside the fenderwell.

The three holes under my 61 tank had nothing above them and went straight into the gas tank cavity - they must stay open and are critical to safety...

The holes circled in RED are vent holes. Do not cover. The double one on the right is where the stock fuel line went. The BLUE patches were anti squeak pads. Tar paper was used. There was NEVER any fabric below the tank from the factory. The holes circled in GREEN are where the tank straps went.
