Front Fender Emblems
I would like to replace the cross flag emblem on my 65 front fenders with the 396 turbo jet emblem. Does anybody know if I can use existing holes? Hate to have to drill new ones.

If your car is not a 396 why would you do that? But you could cut the studs of and use 3M emblem tape

Your best bet is to grind off the Studs and use the 3M emblem adhesive. No matter what you would have to drill a third hole for the emblem even if the two lined up because you have another stud on the big block emblems.

Think I’ll grind off two of the studs and hopefully the remaining one will fit and then use emblem adhesive. Not familiar with 3m emblem adhesive, doesn’t damage the paint?

that stuff is used on almost all new cars for the last 30 years or so. if your paint is in good shape now it wont hurt it at all.

Just to let anyone that might be interested to know, I got the 396 emblem in and the mounting studs measure 2 1/16”. The cross flags measure 1 7/8”. Don’t ask me why they didn’t make them an even 2”, guess that would be too easy.
Anyway, I think t can elongate each hole about 3/32” outward and then trim the third leg off, it should work without any adhesive. And if ever go back, the nuts should cover the enlarged holes.

Emblem adhesive is actually a two sided tape, usually with a red backing. You can trim it to any shape, apply it to the emblem and then when ready peel off the red backing and you get one shot to get it right!
As for paint damage, I used it to adhere the front circular Cobra emblem on the nose of my FFR Daytona Coupe. Later a punk in a Honda ran a red light and I hit him broadside at about 30mph. Both the wife and I were wearing 5 points and were fine. The fiberglass nose was destroyed as was the small tubing that supported the front hinges and radiator. You will be happy to hear that the massive frame rail impaled his weak little Honda completely destroying the front wheel and engine. He was totaled. I needed a new nose, welding and paint. Anyway, I found the front emblem about 100 feet past the intersection. I still have it somewhere along with the paint and primer that it pulled off the front of the car. That crap sticks like glue and can pull your paint off the car! That said, monofilament or dental floss can be used with a sawing motion to remove most emblems while preserving your paint.

Heating the emblem with a blow dryer beforehand makes the fishing line glide through the adhesive...
