Roller lifters

Roller lifters
Just fitted hydraulic roller lifters and rockers to my 66 427 and they are very noisy until warm.
Not tapping just mechanical noise in general
Should I use a different oil now and if so will it make a difference? Currently using a break in oil
Many Thanks

What weight is the break in oil?

^This is an important question!
You can’t add roller lifters to a non-roller cam. Also, roller cams do not require break in to set the cam lobe to the lifter.

It is normal to have some noise at start up until the lifters pump up. How much preload did you put on the lifters during adjustment?

Zero preload plus 1/2 a turn

did you add the the correct groove to the rear of the cam shaft? did you add the holes needed in the front of the block for oil?

When I rebuilt my 66 427 - 390 horse, I used Comp cams roller cam and lifters. They were so noisy, I ended up exchanging the set. I went through 3 oil changes with conventional 10W-30 oil. Still some noise. I switched to synthetic same weight and the noise went away. Could be from break in but it happened right after the oil change. There is no break in with roller cams but I wanted the engine to break in properly before switching to synthetic. All good now, no smoke, oil burning and great oil pressure.
I figured we needed the Zinc contend in our oil but I guess with roller lifters maybe it's no longer required
What grade and make of synthetic oil do you use?
BTW as "Jaguar Driver" what do you have?

Zinc content not really an issue with roller lifters. BTW: the zinc levels were lowered, not eliminated in modern oils for the catalitic converter lifespan. I use the Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec or Valvoline Synthetic. 10W-30 Usually get whatever is on sale. In my opinion, most any major brand full synthetic is far and above the best conventional oil. As far as Jaguars, I have been working on them since the 70's and have owned a lot. I was even President of the JCNA (Jaguar Clubs of North America) for 5 terms. At this time, we have a late model XF. I had a couple of XKE's until recently. One sold at Pebble Beach and the other was a race car that I ended up selling to a guy in Florida. Currently also have a Ferrari and an Aston Martin besides the Corvette.

Great stuff, thanks again...I'll give that a go.

My hyd rollers are not noisy.
I adjusted them while running, one at a time, on a warm, but not hot, motor: back off one at a time until clatter, then tighten to clatter just stops then another 1/4 turn. That a bit more than zero lashed, and will not make noise hot or cold. You are going to need either a valve cover with eight holes cut out, (do one side at a time) or some other oil dam at the bottom of the head to keep the oil from getting all over the place. Heavy alum foil wrapped over the psuhrod end of the rocker will oil spray down. They make clips that do the same thing for stamped steel rockers but that isn't what you have, maybe they will fit or maybe they won't.

If they are Morel hyd rollers, they will be noisy when cold. There is nothing you can do about it. The oil, preload, mileage etc, nothing will improve the cold clatter. Its all in how they are machined and the internal tolerances. You just have to live with it. I had 25k miles on my Morels before one finally ate a roller bearing. I have solid roller lifters going in it now to get away from the clatter.
