Default Trouble Finding 34.4" Water Pump Belt for 427/450

I've ordered the 3837810 short 34.4" version (I know not where or how this measurement is taken) water pump belt for my 427/450 non A/C non PS (original pulleys) car from two aftermarket vendors now. One of them was out of stock indefinitely and the other sent me the longer version (34.8") which was mis labeled. They are also out of stock on this belt until after the 1st of the year at least also. I guess there's not much demand for this shorter belt for the 427. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had experienced this same problem and was able to come up with a belt that fits at their local Napa or other parts store. I know that Quanta makes this belt but I'd really prefer to buy it locally since every time I receive this $35.00 belt in the wrong size I wind up paying for shipping both ways.

If anyone has a belt number that works I'd really appreciate having it.

Thanks

is this the belt that goes from the crank-to-water pump only ?

1969 427,390-400-435, w/o ac takes a 31.86'' belt

Now, go to your local auto parts store. if the belt doesn't fit,a nd you ahven't gotten it dirty or buggered it up, they will almost always exchange it for smaller or larger belt.

Yes, from crank pulley to water pump. the correct size for my application is 34.4" How this is measured, I do not know..Outside circumference with a tape measure? Anyway, I'm sure a 31.86 belt is too short. The 34.8" belt that I received was only slightly too large.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW THE LENGTH/MEASUREMENT OF THE BELT IS DETERMINED AT THE FACTORY? inside circumference? outside circumference? middle circumference?

The belt fit is determined by both length and width.
Length is measured by outside diameter. Run a string around the OD and then measure the string length. Your tape measure will be close but not exact. Width sets how high or deep your belt rides in the same pulley.
a wider belt rides high so will effectively be shorter. Narrow belts are effectively longer.
widths vary by manufacturer.
The three major suppliers are Dayco, Gates and Goodyear. Napa reboxes Gates belts.
widths are available in 13/32, 15/32 and 17/32, 3/8 may be available also.
If you go too narrow the belt will bottom out in the pulley and slip. You want it to wedge in the pulley sides for grip.
Any good parts store will have a belt measurement tool. Two 1/2 pulleys on a slider. Put your belt on the tool and slide it down tight, the length measured will convert to part numbers listed on the tool.
This will help get a belt that fits properly on your car.
If you need an OEM GM part for judging I can't help.

Thanks AZDoug. I think I posted the question before your reply and belt guide link came up on my computer. I any case, this horse appreciates the water...Thanks again.

Dayco 15345..Thanks, but that is a top cog belt. I'm trying to find original looking parts for my mostly original car and engine..Quanta has my belt and it is on the way..($25 for the belt and $20 for the UPS)...Yep, gouged on the shipping. If that doesn't fit, I'm just going to install an idler pulley until I can find the right belt..what a PITA Chevy handed us in 1966.

car is a mid sept 65 build 66 Coupe 427/450hp L-71 motor.. freshly rebuilt to L-71 specs..one belt for water pump, another for the alt. no adjustment on the water pump belt. Has to fit just right...not too tight (1/2" slack) or it will destroy the pulley.

I agree. NAPA has the "knowhow"..but already ordered the 34.4" belt from Quanta..
