I would guess that the ones that could accurately answer your question the best are either dead or retired at the very least.

I have read on the internet that there was some testing done and GM found out there was no performance gain using 2 1/2 exhausts after 1965. I didn't say I believe it. I said I read it on the internet.

COST. Took several low-volume exhaust manifold castings with 2-1/2" outlets and their associated machining operations out of the system, and the pipes on most applications (except base engine Powerglide) necked-UP to 2-1/2" a couple of inches below the manifold outlet. They did it again in 1969, when all exhaust systems (including the L-88) had 2" exhaust systems.
