[C2] 1964 Fat Boy Build

Lifted the passenger side about 6”. Plenty of room to clean and paint. I also pulled the old rusty fuel line and will run dual ss lines tomorrow. Probably one of the most difficult tasks on this project. Yes, once I jacked it up I have a back up for the back up for the back up. Can’t be too careful when your hands are in harms way!
Mark - clever idea how you approached access to frame & cage - would you be able to elaborate on the process you employed on this task - Many Thanks GV
PS: interested as I doubt you took out such things as the steering column and other ancillary's to do this

I haven’t connected the lines to the new MC yet. I removed the splash shields, unbolted the steering column from the rag joint (took 2 minutes), and the bumpers are not on the car. I removed the four body bolts from the passenger side (yes, I count the core support as one) and loosened the four on the driver side. I cut a 2x4 so that it spanned 1/2 the birdcage channel length and ended just past a rocker trim mount on both ends. I then clamped each end to the mount to hold the 2x4 against the outer edge of the birdcage channel while preventing the 2x4 from pushing out at the botttom as I jacked the body up (this was a real concern as the angle increases as the body rises). Then I jacked slow until I could access the fuel line bolts (there are five), keeping the 6 ton stands under the ends and the 3 ton stands independent with sections of 2x4 inside the channel just in case. The rest was easy!

Made up one of my stainless fuel lines and installed fittings on both ends. Tomorrow I’ll make the other one. The biggest challenge was drilling out the #10 hole in the dual 3/8” line clamp to 5/16” (the size of the stock frame clamp holes). I’m using stainless strap line clamps and they literally melted three drill bits and that was going slow and using lubricant (that’s what she said).
37 degree flaring tools.
Just a little more fine tuning required on the far end.
Steel AN fittings.

Nice job on the fittings - the tool with the multiple holes; not seen one like that before - is that to hold the pipe whilst the end is flared - Thanks GV

Yes it is and with stainless you have to crank those wingnuts down tightly so the line flares vs, simply pushing out the back. Use a little light oil on the flaring tool and make sure you install the tube sleeve and then tube nut first!

The clamp that you twist down has a break away function so that you can't over torque it....gives you a perfect flare every time as long as everything is aligned properly.

GV, if you're in the market, I highly recommend this version...

PS: Just checked it out, not a bad deal with the cutter and bender as a package.

Yea, I have one of the Eastwood flaring tools you use in a bench vice, but for flaring lines already on a car, or awkwardly long lines that you can't easily get on your work bench, that Rigid flaring tool can't be beat.

I say there are too many garage queens. I love the flares which is why I bought mine. And yes I am leaving them on a '66 427 4 speed numbers matching coupe and painting it the original Bahama Blue, with flares. heheheh

You guys crack me up! Of course while you’re laughing I’m cranking away.
Made my other lineand snaked them into position, and dropped the passenger side back down onto the frame. Tomorrow my neighborhood is having a car show and I agreed to bring the convertible (hope no one steals anything!), so I probably wont get much done.
Mirror images (almost). The tape makes it easier to match them as I bent the second line and then snake them through the car at the same time. I first tried from the rear. She didn’t like that, so I inserted it from the front and it went right in.
This is the tank end.
All in place with the body down on new mounts on the passenger side. Plenty of room! I made a stainless guard for that little bit on the outside of the frame which I’ll install later. Probably overkill, but better safe than sorry.
Still need to secure this end and make the final bends. I’ll do that after I finish lifting and painting the chassis on the driver side.
Engine bay side. I’ll run ptfe braided lines to the engine.

Hey, cars are like women. Ignore them at your peril, figure out what they like, give it to them regularly and they will purr for you for as long as you are together. Some of us prefer oem and some prefer upgrades and enhancements. It’s all good as there is a butt for every seat.
