66 transmission and engine removal as a unit ?
Trying to decide on puling SB engine with the Muncie 4spd or each separately and after rebuilding both, replace as one unit. As a unit, I'm wondering if it is more difficult to manipulate the set out and back in the car then to pull and reinstall each as a separate unit. I would like to reinstall as a unit for obvious ease of tranny and engine connection while outside the car versus connection while under the car. Plan on utilizing jack stands, blocks and a 2 ton engine lift.Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on what you have for a facility to remove said unit, I normally try and remove and install as one unit. Again, I have access to lifts and other equipment that may not be at your disposal.

I pulled mine as a single unit. I can't remember what the tool is called, but having it made it an easy job. Basically it was what I attached to the engine and it had a crank on it to allow shifting the lift point fore/aft. Made tilting the engine/trans super easy.

Thanks. I'll be working with the car on jack stands and limited to a 2 ton engine lift from HF, engine leveler and floor jack.I'm thinking that w/o a 2 or 4 post lift the only option will be to R & R each separately.

I always R&R as a single unit. Wouldn't do it any other way. The engine leveler makes the job easy. Be sure to plug the transmission output shaft to avoid spilling fluid.

We pulled it as one unit.

I think I only removed the drivers front tire but can't tell from the picture. The floor jack was there as a back up.

You will need some ceiling height in many cases. Most garages are probably tall enough but if you have the car parked under an open garage door you could run into a head room problem unless you can close it. I had to pull the radiator support on my BB but looks like you can get away without doing so with a SB.

Can a powerglide and engine be removed as one unit as easily as a 4 speed?

It’s so easy, even a girl can do it!
Actually, my wife just posed for the picture. I would only pull it and replace it as a unit and the only way you can do it is with a leveler as mentioned above. Just realize there is a real pucker factor as it passes over that fragile fiberglass body (or aluminum in the case of my cobra below), so be careful, take it slow and check clearances often. Good luck!
