THeres a good thread on team chevelle that shows all the tell tale signs of knockoff/repop tags.
I dont think its a big deal if the original is banged up, missing when it came off for paint etc but with all the fakes these days I can see the cause for alarm.
Mine came up missing at paint jail (along with everyone elses), never bothered getting another made.

Your tag looks real ,the fake one is to new looking ,I know a guy a few years back bought one for 500.00 for a chevy conv

From what is showing it has the metal tags that were on the 63 case and the pulley looks like it could be correct. The back plate would help determine more and the model # on the metal tags spot welded to the case.

I believe all these things could be explained. After all, these are hourly union workers just trying to make it to 5:00. He throws a grinder up there and if it hits the wrong area, so what. Along with the weld, who cares if it does not hit the dimple. No one is going to fire him, he's union. The hole though is a puzzle. But if it did hold another tag and he wanted to hide hole, would he not just cover up hole by sliding tag over.

Looks like someone bought a nice looking 63 coupe with air conditioning for under $90,000. Regardless of “original” or not this does not affect anyone other than the buyer from enjoying his/her purchase. I’m happy for them.

Really, if you're not in it for the money, don't care about re-sale, and just love driving an iconic old car, then what does it matter that purists (and/or those trying to make money off of old Corvettes) say that your car is not worth it. Its worth what you get out of it. If that's not money (and for some of us, it isn't) then more power to you. Buy what you like and enjoy it, re-sale and provenance be damned. One day, in the not too distant future, nobody will know the difference, or care, anyway.

If we could only see behind the glove box. As a reminder the 63 and early 64 AC blend door actuator differed from later production as did the vacuum water control valve. No sure how the early design was supposed to work but I think the idea was to regulate the amount of hot water passing through the water valve by stepping the vacuum through a bleed off rate. This design was superseded sometime in the 1st quarter of 64 calendar year as the parts book show different part numbers for the vacuum valve and I think there was a service bulletin released concerning this change. Photos are from my 6 Dec 63 build coupe, the AC box was dated Nov. The blend door actuator has broken off the shaft so I'll have to figure out how to reattach at some point in the restoration. I don't have a photo of the early vacuum valve as it is missing in action on my Corvette.

I wonder why only 278 63s had AC. Was the option only offered very late in the year?

It was offered mid-year IIRC - those cars are rare indeed - I've only seen two...
There are some fakes but its an arduous accomplishment to say the least!
