Default Modified car (or RestoMod) inner fender coating?

I was able to take my modified '67 out for a short "shake-down" drive (no interior, hood, proper exhaust, bumpers, etc) last Saturday and noticed that the soft Michelin Pilot Sports pick up every gravel rock on the rural Arizona road around my immediate area. I have a light coat of Rapter Liner in the inner part of each fender, and I will be putting Dyna-mat in the interior of the car...but was wondering what some of you may have done in your fenders....My car won't be a pristine show car, but I do want it to look good as a nice hot rodded driver. Looking for info on a good rubberized coating I can spray in the fender wells....anyone used Lizard Skin for this?

I sprayed three heavy coats of 3M undercoating under the front fenders of the '61 and will do the same to the '72 when I get some time. Two cans per fender
Yes, these MPSS tires pick up lots of gravel, they hammered the finish on the side skirts on the C7 Z06. Should have had the skirts wrapped before i ever drove the car. Better the skirts than the body side, though

I would think the spray on stuff should be fine, with ne extra inner liner protection needed as the MPSS doesn't have deep enuf tread to pick up bolts and wheel weights, just pea size or smaller pebbles.

AZDoug, thanks for the response and info. I saw from searches that a lot of folks use the 3m spray can stuff....just was a little leary....but must of the stuff available to spray with a shunt gun is also 1 component....so i may go with the can stuff.

Wear old clothes and shoes when you do spray. Or one of those thin disposable cover all garments over your clothes.

On my vintage road race car I cut high density foam that was about 1/4 inch thick and used adhesive to bond to inner fenders. before putting this on I was getting stars in paint from gravel on track, after putting it on i went 10 years with no more stars. if you cut it to lay into fender you can't see it and it is clean simple and works.

Jerry,
Thanks, that's a good idea. Something to consider.

I prefer black enamel paint for the smooth look.

I used that on the underside. And can use under the fenders....but it drys hard with no rubber like exterior....I was thinking some sort of rubberized product would diminish the rocks crackling under the fenders....

Boom mat spray has excellent coverage. You will need about 1 can per wheel well

I finished my 62 restomod about 6 mo. ago using a Corvette Corrections chassis. I made some inner fender panels out of ABS that fit behind the headlight buckets and also behind the front wheels. Makes it look like a modern inner fender. The ABS panels form easily with a heat gun and heat lamps. This keeps all the road junk off the back of the headlights and the planels that collect dirt behind the wheels. They can also be easily removed and cleaned.

I had quite a few stars in my 57 so I ground them out and applied small patches of mat in the grind area and then two layers of mat to the whole tops of the fenders.
No stars yet! (and no undercoat)

If you are really worried about rocks cracking the paint from the underside, glue some foam to the bare fiberglass. The downside is, you will need to strip every bit of coating off of the wheel well, then scuff with 80 grit. This is what I did on the aluminum AC Cobras I have built. Apply the 1/4" foam with a good laminate counter glue.

Where did you purchase this ABS plastic and how did you attach it once formed?

Got the 4 X 8 sheets of ABS from Royal Plastics in Dallas. I made some small 'L' shaped tabs and glued them to the inside if the fenders using some 3M panel bond and then just screwed the formed panels to the tabs. I put some weatherstripping around the edges of the panels to seal them.
