Default Fender Reinforcements

As per the recommendations on the forum to put the fender reinforcements under the from fenders I went and purchased a set.
Both my 61's have the typical cracking along the inside edge of the top of the fender.
I brought the reinforcements to the shop to check the fit this morning and after temporarily bolting them up, my body guy loved them.
He said he is glad I got them because he was going to start repairing the cracks next week and he will wait until they are installed. It really stops most of the flex on the top of the fender.
He said it even gave the fender a nicer curve.
So anyone considering painting 59-62 car I would put these on before any body work.
I plan to add a couple more holes and using countersunk screws attaching them permanently next week.
I will post pics when I am done.

Thanks. I need to get a pair of these for my '61. No downside to stronger and straighter fenders!!

I put them on my 61 and they really firm things up.

Gruesome thought but think they may have been somewhat of a safety issue-maybe front end hits and impaling?

That would be the least of your worries in a front end hit in one of these cars. As Frankie once so eloquently put it: "expect the steering column or engine to take you out." That straight column from box to wheel is like a giant lance poised for action!!

I bought the Sermersheim fiberglass Z fender top reinforcements.

Used nuts and bolts for locating, and bonding adhesive to attach them under the fenders so there wouldn't be bunch of stress on the fender top spear studs snugging the reinforcements tight.

I installed the reinforcements on the 61 this morning,
I used #10 x 24 countersunk screws, flat and lock washers.
Here are some pics.
What a difference it made.

I recommend this to all late C1 owners. It firms things up noticeably.

Truth be told, and commercials with sexy young models aside, i suspect there was huge collective 'Oh, no..." from millions of middle aged women when Viagra became available.
