Though the stamps themselves look good, I'm having a hard time seeing any broach marks. I don't know if someone used sand paper, steel wool, or some other abrasive material to remove the paint and thus removed the broach marks, or if the broach marks are gone because the pad was decked?

There are a number of us on here that can give you an educated guess about the authenticity of a pad, but the only way to really know for sure, is to pay someone like Al Grenning to authenticate it. http://ccas4vettes.com/

Pad surface has been effected by hand or machine..........likely a very (very) shallow cut with a machine during engine rebuilding sometime in the past. But the stamping look okay to me, and the dates of the engine and car build (by VIN) line up nicely.

Rest in peace.

Larry

I am exactly the opposite of a NCRS guru, but I do agree with post #2.

In fact it looks to me like there are sideways striations rather than vertical broach marks - as if someone used sandpaper to clean the pad while it was on the car.

Looks like it was recently “cleaned”. Also, looks like there are grind marks on the water pump?

The numbers look legit to me. The engine has either been decked very, very lightly in the past or the pad was sanded on. The direction of the marks I can see in photo number 2 by the first set of numbers looks like they were produced when the block was decked. Not the same direction as original broach marks. That said, those look like factory numbers to me, and if it were my car, I would be satisfied that the engine was original.

I agree.....
The pad has obviously been sanded side to side.

Very faint broach marks are there.
The numbers look original.

I'm inclined to agree with those that feel it could be original, but may have had a very light decking. In this picture (#4 above) there does appear to be broach marks that could be original.

I would just ask how the casting date of the block lines up with the assembly date of the engine?

Good luck... GUSTO

I see what appear to be remnants of broach marks toward the front of the pad. I also see what appears to be sanding marks that are not consistent with what a decked block would look like after machining. The swirl marks are not very concentric and may have been made with an electric drill and wire wheel or sanding disc. It does appear to have definitely been sanded, some by hand, which is unfortunate. That said, I like the numbers themselves. If they are original to the pad, they sure were careful lining them up and stamping them.

I see additional #'s above the VIN stamp. Anyone else? BTW I'm no Guru.
