1962 Engine Swap suggestions
Hello,
I have a 1962 with a non-numbers matching 327 that has been nothing but problems. The engine is connected to a Powerglide that I also want to replace. I'm looking to change the engine and transmission and am looking for suggestions on what engine is the easiest to install in order to achieve my goals. The car is sitting on the original frame with the original front steering and suspension.
My goals of the are:

My goals of the are:
- Fun and easy driver
- Lowest amount of modifications to the car
- Use an EFI system (hopefully something along the lines of the the Edelbrock Proflo or similar)
- Reliability
- 350+ HP
- Fit under the stock hood
- Automatic transmission (my legs are too long to deal with a clutch) - open to suggestions on what will fit without having to change the crossover brace under the car
- I'm not concerned with the engine looking "stock" since this car is for fun and not show

Why not just rebuild the 327? Your horsepower goals can be easily met with it and in my mind are cool engines. Any transmission can be made to bolt up to it as well. Find someone local with a good reputation. Good machine work goes a long way in determining the performance and longevity of an engine, and you are certainly not guaranteed that with every crate motor.

The SBC options are endless. But your budget should be. How much do you want to spend. And for all we know your old 327 could use some TLC and it could be good as new

Almost Retired
I put a 383 crate motor from BluePrint Engines in my 62 several years ago and just love. I put a Tremec 5 speed behind it because I could not find an automatic with overdrive that would fit without a lot of modifications. Put about 7000 miles on my car a year, take it on 4 to 5 hundred mile trips regularly, love the 5-speed. I would be curious if someone finds an auto with overdrive that fits. If you don't get an auto with overdrive you have to run such a gear that you lose the fun of driving a car with both power and highway drivability.
Just my 2 cents!

Hmm, I had a 700R4 in my ‘61 with no problem.
Blueprint Engines will build any of their engines and dyno it with a Holley Sniper EFI System for a few more bucks. I’m going with this one for my ‘64, but it would be overkill for your purpose. You might want to look at some of their other engine options.

Blueprint engine with a 4L60E or 4L65E automatic transmission paired with a Holley EFI Snipper Fuel Injection system to run the EFI fuel injection system and automatic transmissions. Plus you can purchase a Holley C2 Corvette EFI gas fuel tank with a built in Holley electric gas pump.

Don't see why not, they put in LS3 Corvette engines with 6 speed automatics in C1 & C2. Fabrication will probably be needed. Why would someone put in a TH400, TH350 or TH200R4 if they want an electronic EFI fuel injection system? The goal is to go foward with technology, not backwards.

to be fair all those trans where designed and built well after powerglides where introduced. so that is a step up and moving forward.

Why? I really want to go back to a 30s, up to a 1940 Ford with a flathead engine and a Zepher gear box and a Columbia butt.

I have to agree. The reason we are all playing with cars 50 years old or older is why we're here. Definitely NOT moving forward with the latest and the greatest. Air bags and blue tooth and a back up camera? No thanks.

I would advise a torque motor like a 383 or a 400/406 with a turbo 350 trans and a set of higher (3.36) gears. Also a bolt on EFI unit. Would be fun and simple.

if you are not really sold on an electronic trans, then i think the 200-4r is the way to go. the case is small enough to fit and the cross brace shouldn't be a big deal. several reputable firms offer them. i bought mine and the torque converter from phoenix and very satisfied. the rebuilt 327 would be plenty peppy. and, you could put a throttle body style efi on it. i like the muscle from the 383 and 406.
