Default cutting 1/2 coil

If you cut less than one full coil on the front springs will they seat in the A arm and frame pockets correctly or will they move or rotate?

They will seat properly.... but you need to spin the spring until the new cut off point butts up against the stop. You'll see how it sits when you take it apart.

What about the other end? since it is not seated against a stop, it seems like the spring might be able to rotate.

They index in the upper spring pocket. They sit where ever they fall in the lower spring pocket. So cutting a coil I would cut on the bottom of the spring. As for moving/rotation after installation I haven't heard of any observations of that - always a possibility I guess.

There's a pocket for the spring end top and bottom. It may not hurt anything having the end out of the pocket but I wouldn't do it that way. You can buy shorter springs if that's what you want.

My option to install coil overs to the front of the Hemi/Vette has dragged out to late spring, early summer. Based on that I'm thinking of just cutting the coils to get the drop I want.

So, as I remember in 65 there was a heavier spring with the 396 big block. My spring looks pretty heavy, it's 0.70" thick so it maybe the big spring for that vintage.

Now from the top of the tire to the fender lip is 7", which is why I want to lower the front. The distance between the bump stop and the frame is 5". So what do you think I could cut out of the spring to maybe drop it half that distance, say 2.5"? I could cut the top of the bump stop off by 1/2" as well as we did when I was is school and we all lowered our cars.

Any ideas anyone??

Have you got a picture of this as I'm having a hard time visualizing a 7 inch gap from top of tire to the fender lip.

Boy that was stupid! I've had the car on jack stands for 3 months while I've been gone to Arizona. Just dropped it and I guess I'm really back to one coil and hopefully one inch.

Not sure if this matters to you but I believe cutting a coil spring in effect increases its intrinsic spring rate. May adversely affect ride quality.

I put the f41 springs with a 1/2 cut coil in a 78. Even with aluminum heads and water pump, it was too much of a drop.
I think the shorter (stiffer) spring would have been fine as it came.

For the standard OEM long springs, Id cut one coil at a time, and make sure they seat in the top pocket. (I had coil not seat correctly and rub on the frame)

This has been my experience. Cutting coil springs is a great way to induce a harsh and rough ride to your vehicle. Literally, a hack job. Much better off getting custom height springs with the stock rate. BTDT with cut springs (torched springs are even worse) and it is truly a quick way to screw up a nice car.

Well, not 7 inches but I see you do have flared and opened up wheel wells which now makes a little more sense. ]

Good video on cutting coils, thanks. I think I'll go that route. I have a 4 post lift so shouldn't be too bad.
