'65 396 Barn Find
Hello everyone, long time no talk. After a year and a half of trying to save this BBC c2 I finally got to talk with the owner and see it up close. Need some help with a possible purchase, northern "barn find" Look like a blk/blk 396 convt car rotting away. Guy is interested to sell it, said the motor isn't original and he had put the kO's on when the car was restored in the 90s, (seats are from '69). But its originally a teak steering wheel, power window, and "M-22" transmission. Was a little too cold for me to take a harder look than the photos I have. Any helpful information before I head back tomorrow would be greatly appreciated. If the rear pumpkin gear ratio code and the m-22 casting number check out correctly i am doubtful they are original, what is the value in the M-22 and drivetrain combined? Because if i buy it and it doesn't have a replacement 396 or other decent powertrain, ill probably drop an LS and upgrade it to more modern powertrain.
Also any other indications for it being a real bbc other than the tach redline and sway bar as i don't have any tools or calipers on this trip.
Frame. Maybe repaint
exhaust pipe

C2 of Year Finalist (appearance mods) 2019
Nice find but definitely not a real big block car. Even if it was a Proto type big black car it’s still 7000 to early. They didn’t start making big blocks till after 11,000 most were between 12,000 and the end of production. Also real big black cars have the battery on the driver side, and do not use a washer bottle they use a washer bag.

I see now that big block 396 was only offered half way through the production year, also the trim tag says it was ext. whOK's are Corvette america from the 90's not kelsey hayes. Guy said $22k will take it home.

mighty tempting at 22K, who cares if its real or not, if its solid, you cant get a basket case 65 for 22K. other than the seats it looks like its all there.

I had one of those, a NOM 65 convertible properly changed over to BB, with a really nasty 427. Sold it 30 years ago this month and have regretted it every day since. My 66 red thing is a real BB car with a correct casting code 427 and I hate it because its a museum piece, not a car. Screw that. Buy that car, put a 509 and a 5 speed in it and enjoy the rest of your life driving it everywhere!

You stole that car. Well done. It was being totally mistreated where it was. Thanks for the save....now if only I could convince you to install a gen-1 SBC 383-406 stroker engine and forget about the LS.....
