Default Protecto plate machine

Good morning. I am in possession of what I believe to be an original GM protecto plate machine. It is made by Addressograph-Multigraph. There is a model number and serial number. How can I properly identify what I have ?

while I will assume your the same guy on team chevelle.. those machines could have been found at each GM assembly plant from 64-72. and depending on the plant they could have had more then one I am not sure. how did you come across this machine?

Yes, same guy. I purchased a small board of GM parts & this was part of the deal. My partner believes this item has a high dollar value. I would like to find someone that can verify the machine & appraise what we own.

oh it has major value because in wrong hands it can take a plane jane car and turn it into a six figure one of one car in short order. if you could post pictures it would help. on this board its much easier to do so from your phone or computer. just click on the picture icon and up load them

You aren’t loading pictures properly. Go to the following link for directions... start at post #13 where the site changed to the most recent format:

You can practice and test things in the Help section rather than trial and error here in the Discussion threads.

This. ^^^^. I have an old friend that has one of these machines and a bunch of blank plates. He's had it for decades. A big Chevy collector. His is in his man cave, a display-only item. He has never, and will never use it. In the wrong hands, this could ruin the hobby and the value of many rare cars. An honest person would disable the machine. The only value this machine has, other than historical, is to counterfeit base level cars into very rare ones. Not a good thing. To a collector, the machine is not worth much $$$. To a criminal, it is worth a bundle. Which are you?

Ryder,
I'm sure you didn't come here looking for a bunch of lectures on ethics. You've posted an honest question about a unique piece of equipment. It is certainly collectable and a great piece of automotive history for any GM fan. As to value, I believe it will be pretty difficult to say in actual dollars and cents. While rare, the market for this type of item will be pretty limited. It would be a great addition to a collector or museum. I don't know what your financial circumstances are but you could probably donate this to a GM based auto museum and recieve a considerable tax write off, if you do not neccessarily need the cash for it. Or you could offer it at one of the larger auction houses to hit a larger market and get the item's true market value.
Good luck either way. I think it's a neat piece.
Greg

I grew up a few miles from Addressograph Multigraph in Euclid Ohio. It was located in an area of several machine shops. Lincoln Electric is down the street. I worked summer jobs in a few of them in the area when I was in junior and senior high school. Most of them had that type of machine. My brother's shop is still there. He has one like it now. So not sure how rare they are.

Default Machine

Here is my take on it. Its interesting, historic and....rare. I dont think its super valuable. I personally dont care about a cars paperwork. I always assume tank stickers, bills of sale etc are always fake. If you buy a car based on a plate or piece of paper, you are in trouble. If the car checks out and shows all the characteristics of what its supposed to, then paperwork is a nice addition.
