2023 C2 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
I’ve sold a number of things on CL, but I always state cash and we will meet in the parking lot of the local police station. Has been pretty effective eliminating scams and anyone thinking of ripping me off.

I have a brake lathe for sale on the site and I received this offer. The guy is persistent! What do you think?
Him: Hi. I'm Ronald, I'm interested in your lathe you have on CL? What will be the least you will take for it ?Me: Hi, I am Joe. This is a great lathe and I just cut 4 rotors with it.i am the only one who usex it. I will take 450.Him: Fair price. I'll write a check and i'll include money for my movers. Deduct your pay and pls give rest to my movers when they pick up. Ok?Me:I do not accept checks. Have your movers come with cash.Him: Why? I will mail you your payment a cashiers check through the regular USPS and when you get the check cashed and your pay in your hands, then you can now let me know when my movers can come for pick up, Sounds good?
Him: Hello. Did you get my last text?

I HOPE that you haven't sold the brake lathe!!!....as I have a Nigerian Prince Uncle that wants to buy your brake lathe for 3 TIMES your asking price...he just NEEDS ALL your bank routing information to transfer the funds....Mark

Sold one of our snowmobiles this year. Got the same SCAM. What's my best bottom dollar? Doe to my recent injury I won't be able to come by and look it over. My secretary will send you a bank check for twice the agreed price and you can write a check for the difference, less $100 for your troubles, to the movers when they come by to pick it up.
Was so pissed that I began to fall for it that I responded "Go Bleep Yourself", "Don't contact me again". Had two guys bidding on it the next day. Got $200 more than the original asking price.
Total SCAM. Trying to get an account #.

I've bought and sold many things on CL, including my vette. My first rule when selling anything is I don't do business by text or email. Especially on the first contact. I state that in my ad and if they send a text or email I just ignore it. Especially if they ask if I still have the "item" for sale. If they don't know what the "item" is, that's a pretty good indication it's a scam.

CL is so full of scammers it's almost not worth the effort. If I bother, I say phone calls only, no text, no email. I've sold several things since Xmas on Facebook marketplace that were also listed on CL. No bites on CL, usually first contact on FB resulted in sale.

Frankly - I've had more trouble with the, shall we say, more contentious types, on this forum than I've EVER had with patrons of eBay or Craigslist...

So it looks like we have some thing in common - I’ve had EXACTLY the same experience! Usually it starts with some SA type who posts a contentious statement first and then dissembles afterwards.........

I use the same approach - have had a few who refuse to meet that way, which tells you a lot right from the start!

Its a bit of a sad commentary but most of us are in our "twilight years" and there are miscreants out there that may see us as easy targets for mischief.... So, the more precautions you take in the final transaction the better. Meeting at a safe place and taking a friend or two and snapping a cell phone picture of the buyer's license plate never hurts... some even go "strapped" as the gangsters say...

Could you move to a better neighborhood and avoid all that drama?
